When companies are deciding which kind of rollformer they want — in-plant or portable — they might not know that there are common misconceptions about both types of machines. New Tech Machinery (NTM), a leading industry manufacturer of portable rollforming machines, hears these myths often and have found that these are typically exceptions and not the rule.
They actually address these in an informative article as a way of showing how far portable rollforming machines have come along. Here are two of the major misconceptions they discuss in their article:
NTM often hears that in-plant machines are far superior to portable machines. This belief actually comes from when portable machines were first introduced when they were arguably inferior to in-plant machines, but the same is not true today.
Katie Bowles writes, “The current designs and technology of most portable rollforming machines are far superior to the original machines, and the panel profiles and quality of finished metal roof panels are the same in both in-plant and portable rollforming machines.”
Although portable machines are more likely to go out of tolerance when transported to a site, this has not been as big of a concern for new models. Any rollforming machine is able to go out of tolerance, but with proper machine adjustments, this is less likely to happen with portable rollformers.
Katie writes, “Modern designs of portable rollformers stay in adjustment better even during transportation because they have separated forming and drive rollers.”
