These Shingles are Anything but Standard

Malarkey Shingles

By Cass Jacoby, RCS Reporter.

Malarkey shingles are more than just a shingle, they are made cleaner and greener to protect the home for the long haul.

Malarkey shingles go above and beyond, providing a shingle that performs better, protects longer and is more sustainable. Read on to learn about the specific features that set Malarkey shingles apart from the competition.

NEX® polymer modified (rubberized) asphalt

All Malarkey shingles in the U.S. and Canada are now rated at UL2218 Class 3 or Class 4 levels of impact resistance. These superior performance ratings are due, in large part, to the innovative achievements of Malarkey’s polymer modified asphalt formulas.

Imagine the strength and durability of a tire on your roof. Through a process that Malarkey invented, they rubberize the asphalt core of the shingle so it performs more like a vulcanized rubber than a hard asphalt. In doing so they have created a shingle that is stronger, more durable and more resistant to stress, breaking, cracking, granule loss and hail damage.

Most shingles are made with oxidized asphalt, a 100-year-old technology that uses oxygen and extreme heat to harden the asphalt deliberately. The process is super pollutive, contributing tons of annual air pollution. Because the process deteriorates asphalts' natural pliability, the shingles easily become brittle, crack and lose their protective granules.

Malarkey innovated a better process and design, using polymers to create a polymer-modified asphalt (PMA). This process enhances the asphalt’s natural weathering, chemically altering the shingle's core to deliver the best properties of asphalt and rubber can provide.

They also rubberize the adhesive used throughout the shingle. This process creates a stronger adhesive bond for extreme protection. What’s more, Malarkey shingles also feature double rain seals to further protect the integrity of the roof.

3M™ roofing and specialty granules

Granules are very important to a shingle. They not only add color, but protect the asphalt from premature aging. Granules are like the sunscreen of a roof, protecting the shingle from one of the biggest threats — UV aging.

Furthermore, the granule features a photocatalytic technology that is activated when the granules are exposed to ultraviolet light (sunlight) on the rooftop. These granules transform smog gases into a nitrate salt solid that can wash away and mildly fertilize nearby plants.

Sustainable design

Malarkey Roofing Products is committed to the environment and developed the industry’s first smog-reducing shingle by incorporating 3M smog-reducing granules. These granules are used in all of Malarkey’s shingles. You won’t even be able to tell the granules are there because they blend into the shingle’s color.

Malarkey also adds upcycled rubber and plastic polymers from used tires and water bottles to help extend shingle life. The upcycled materials improve the shingle's resilience and strength, creating an incredibly durable material that will last through extreme weather conditions like enhanced wind, rain and impact.

Roofs with Malarkey shingles are not only good for the home, but good for the air and good for the environment.
