Daniel Walker is a supervisor at Tremco’s Weatherproofing Technologies, Inc. (WTI) and his region covers Colorado, Hawaii, Wyoming, Montana and part of Idaho. He has a team of field technicians in those areas but he’s looking for more.
With so many people laid off around the country, we thought it would be great to talk to Daniel about the opportunity to join the WTI team. “It’s not the typical roofing stereotype that most people have,” shared Daniel. “Tremco is the opposite of that. As a technician you are providing a maintenance service for the roof. You’re not using hot tar and kettles; you’re rolling on a coating product and reinforcing fabric. It’s fun work and a good living for the team.”
The technician position has some additional perks that you don’t see at most roofing companies. “Team members get paid for their mileage and receive a nice per diem, in addition to the standard 401K and medical benefits that are available from day one.”
What is great about Daniel is that he understands the role of a field technician because he used to be one. “I came from the field before becoming a supervisor. I have a nice working relationship with the team because I know what they are going through with the day-to-day stuff. They know they can call me, and I can give them an answer because I’ve been there.”
Daniel has spent his life in roofing. “I grew up in southern California and my dad ran a roofing company for as long as I can remember,” he shared. “Throughout high school, especially in the summer I would jump on projects because it was union money. I was making more money than any of my friends. It was hard work, but I was never afraid of hard work and I was learning a trade. After graduation it just made sense for me to start a career in roofing.”
In 2005, after his father closed his roofing business, Daniel, along with his father and uncle, joined the Tremco team. He transferred to Colorado in 2010 and spent a few years working for a large roofing contractor in the area. While there, he learned that the WTI team was looking for supervisors, so he returned to the company in 2015.
Daniel is proud of the fact that Tremco invests very heavily into the safety culture for every employee and every job. “We make sure that new hires are trained on safety, they get their own safety gear from Grainger," said Daniel. “Safety is first.”
His favorite thing about working at WTI is building relationships with the customers. “You can walk in and talk to them about fishing, hunting, and they treat you like a friend,” said Daniel. He also says that there is a strong brotherhood amongst everyone and WTI has enabled him to build a strong network and make some great friends.
