During the 2024 International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) International Convention and Trade Show, we visited USG Securock® Brand Specifications Manager Frank Arevalo for a live interview to discuss the importance of high-performing cover boards in roofing systems and look at some emerging trends in the industry.
Frank shares, “We're seeing more severe weather occurring and it's a trend that's not going to be fading anytime soon. So, because of that, the use of a cover board or a roof board in the system enhances the performance and durability of that roof system.”
He shares some of the products they have available: “We have a gypsum-fiber roof board product that's our universal product with all the major system manufacturers. We have a coated glass-mat product, gypsum-based, that is utilized with adhered systems and cold applications. We have a glass-mat product as well. Both are ultra-lightweight technology, addressing contractors' concerns regarding weight and handling and making things faster in their production.”
Frank takes Heidi around the corner for a live demonstration to show why a cover board is critical to your roof system. Using a single ply membrane without a cover board, he shows an impact test with a nail. Without the cover board, he can puncture the membrane and reach the insulation with minimal pressure. With USG Securock® Gypsum-Fiber Roof Board, the membrane stays intact. He explains, “You can see here there is no puncture through the membrane. Now, you might dent it a little bit, but that’s showing you the merits of why you want to consider the use of a cover board. It’s not going to leak. Which is the key to durability.”
Watch the full interview below to see the demonstration for yourself and understand why a high-performing cover board is a critical part of any roof system.
