The Latest (and Earliest) Film Technology in Metal Roofing

Dupont Tedlar Technology Lunch n Learn
March 9, 2023 at 9:00 a.m.

By Alec Doniger.

Corynn Sheridan explains a classic product that’s new to metal roofing, DuPont™ Tedlar®.

Roofers and contractors alike are always looking for improved solutions to make their jobs easier. The work they do should provide a lasting solution, and it can be frustrating when the elements, along with regular wear-and-tear, affect the longevity of their projects. For over half a decade, DuPont™ has been addressing this issue for other surfaces needing protection from such harm, like hospital walls or aircraft exteriors. They’ve been doing this with DuPont™ Tedlar®, and it’s one of the most universal tools for surface protection in the world.

In our most recent Lunch & Learn, Dupont™ Tedlar®’s Global Marketing Director Corynn Sheridan speaks with Heidi J. Ellsworth, explaining how DuPont™ Tedlar® has become a staple in the metal roofing industry. “[Dupont™ Tedlar®] is a product that has been a part of DuPont™’s portfolio for over 60 years,” Corynn notes. “It has been used in metal architecture for almost the entirety of that time... and is now making waves in the U.S., especially in coastal applications for roofing and facades.”

What is it about DuPont™ Tedlar® that has allowed it to stand the test of time? Corynn has a multitude of answers to this question. “[Dupont™ Tedlar® is] a polyvinyl fluoride film... It has just one flooring unit instead of two, which makes it inherently more flexible and more chemically resistant,” explains Corynn. “It is extremely durable, it's very UV resistant... it does not change color, it doesn't chalk, doesn't fade, doesn't crack. It's very, very consistent over a long period of time.”
