When you started your roofing company, you probably did so because you love the trade. You love the opportunity to work outside and provide essential protection for families and businesses. Who knew that you would need to spend time worrying about securing your own health insurance and being able to offer it affordably to your employees? According to Small Business Trends, 79 percent of small- to mid-sized business owners say that health insurance costs “risk eating up their profitability.”
More than half of roofing contractors nationwide lack health insurance, according to a report by Market Watch and based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In some cases that is because they may be considered contract workers or self-employed. The U.S. Small Business Administration reported that in 2019 there were 24.8 million self-employed business owners with no employees, many of whom lack affordable health coverage.
We reported earlier this year on the challenges and obstacles that can make securing health insurance so difficult. Many roofing contractors have fewer than 50 employees so they are not required to provide health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. With the cost of health services today, offering a good healthcare plan can be a big draw for recruiting new team members to your business.
