Managing payroll for a workforce that’s constantly on the move is a challenge for many construction companies. Traditional methods like paper timesheets often lead to errors, delays and additional labor costs. In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth met with Robert McManus, CFO of Mid-South Roof Systems, to discuss how his company has tackled these obstacles head-on by using innovative technology to improve their payroll system and workflow.
Robert first began working with Mid-South Roof Systems through a CPA firm. He shared, “Mid-South Roof Systems was started around 1990, specializing in commercial roofing. I was the outside CPA with a CPA firm, and they were a client... and it ended up being one of those lunches with the owner. I explained that they really need to hire somebody that knows debits and credits and other things. And there was my gateway to get out of public accounting.”
Since then, he’s worked to improve their payroll system. He explained the initial problem, sharing, “Even though I had experience, and we had a person here that had experience, it was time-consuming and laborious, and we were doing paper timecards and all the differing government filings. We’d mess up every once in a while, and penalties get really severe with that. So, we tried outsourcing it to a conventional payroll service. I won’t name any names, but it didn’t work at all.”
That’s when they looked to Payroll4Construction – a payroll service built just for contractors, equipped to deal with prevailing wage rates, union fringes and different trades and tax jurisdictions. Mid-South was already using other Foundation Software solutions and were able to seamlessly add payroll to their technology stack.
As a multi-state, multi-service commercial roofing contractor with several divisions, Payroll4Construction has made it easy. “We’re mainly located in Georgia, but we do have remote workers in some other states and so we get that set up within FOUNDATION® accounting software and all the data corresponds with Payroll4Construction on that. Typically, if we are going to be in a state where we’re going to have payroll obligations, we’ll have to get our own IDs for unemployment and state withholding and Payroll4Construction takes it from there as far as processing the state obligations.”
