How metal over metal retrofits benefit your clients and the planet.

In today's world, environmental stewardship is more crucial than ever. With mounting emphasis on reducing carbon emissions, enhancing recycling efforts and minimizing energy consumption, it's vital to reflect on how the choices we make can contribute to a greener future. If you’re in the metal over metal retrofit business, you’re already part of an eco-friendly solution. With us here at Roof Hugger, discover the many ways metal over metal retrofits benefit both your clients and the planet.

Key environmental benefits of metal over metal retrofits

  1. Minimal landfill impact
  • Reduced waste: Retrofitting metal over metal generates minimal landfill waste. The primary waste consists of old metal gutters and trim, all of which are fully recyclable.

2.       Longevity and durability

  • Extended service life: Metal roofs offer an impressive lifespan of 40-60 years or more, significantly outlasting most all other roofing materials.

3.       Solar ready

  • Future-proof: Standing seam metal roofs provide an ideal platform for photovoltaic installations. Solar panels can be attached using clamps that do not penetrate the roof, ensuring the integrity of your roofing system. Because of metal’s long service life these panels can be added 10-15 years from now, well within the service life of both the roof and the solar panels.

4.       High recycled content

  • Steel: New steel roof or wall panels contain at least 25% recycled material, with an average recycled content of around 70%.
  • Aluminum: Aluminum roof panels boast a recycled content of 90%-95%.

Comparing metal to other roofing products

Our primary competitors in the metal over metal retrofit market are TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin) and PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) membranes. Although these may appear cost-effective initially, their long-term environmental impact and overall cost often outweigh the benefits:

  • TPO and PVC products
  • Service life: TPO typically lasts 15-20 years, while PVC has a similar lifespan. This is significantly shorter than the durability of metal roofs.
  • Environmental impact: Both TPO and PVC are derived from plastics. Globally, plastic waste is a major pollution issue, with nearly 400 million tons of waste produced annually.
  1. TPO recycled content: Typically 4.8% - 10.0%
  2. PVC recycled content: UP TO 10%, however industry average was 0.25%, as reported by the EPA
  • Recycling claims vs. reality: Despite claims of high recyclability, actual recycling rates for these products fall short of the advertised 90% or greater.

Why metal is a superior choice

Metal roofs are among the most environmentally friendly materials available. Their high recycled content, durability and minimal landfill impact make them a superior choice compared to plastic-based products. When comparing roofing options, it’s essential to consider more than just the initial price. The long-term benefits of metal over metal retrofits – including their sustainability and extended service life – offer significant advantages for both clients and the global environment.

As you guide your customers and project designers through their roofing options, remember that choosing metal over metal is not just a smart financial decision but also a responsible environmental choice.

Stay green and stay informed!
