The domino effect of design and durability

Lone Star College is orchestrating the future of East Aldine’s expansion with the use of architectural metal that’s not only beautiful but built to last.

In the Houston metropolitan area, Lone Star College’s new East Aldine Center stands as both an academic hub and a statement. Like the first domino in a sequence, this striking new structure is already creating buzz and inspiration for upcoming developments in the surrounding area. At the core of this architectural masterpiece is a seamless fusion of stone and metal, with Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings that allows the project to shine – literally and figuratively.

When designers at IBI Group approached the East Aldine Center project, they knew it had to be more than just functional. It had to inspire. The college services as the anchor for an upcoming district featuring office spaces, retail and a community amphitheater. By blending rough cast stone with sleek metal panels, the design team struck a perfect balance between strength and sophistication, setting the stage for future projects.

The choice of metal wasn’t just about aesthetics, but an intentional decision to improve durability, energy efficiency and sustainability. With PAC-CLAD's high-performance cladding, the building will remain resilient against Houston’s demanding climate while delivering an eye-catching, modern appeal featuring the college’s signature red.

Three distinct 22-gauge steel panels coated in Fluropon® from Sherwin-Williams were used to craft the college’s facade. The Copper Penny finish offers the warmth of natural metal without the long-term maintenance headaches, while aluminum Highline S1 panels create a bold, branded entrance that matches the college’s colors.

Lone Star College has set a solid foundation for East Aldine’s expansion and public response to the completed project has been overwhelmingly positive. The use of metal cladding in the project proves that durability and sustainability don’t have to come at the expense of style and its success is a catalyst for future developments in the area.
