Natural disasters wreak havoc on homes and are an absolute nightmare for homeowners. It can also take an unprecedented amount of time for repairs to be completed on these homes. CEO and founder of Captain, Demetrious Gray pointed out to TechCrunch that after huge storms like Hurricane Katrina and Sandy, the average recovery time was 14 months. Even for smaller storms, the financing and repair time can take up to five months and that’s after the homeowner works through details with their mortgage company, insurance provider and contractors.
Enter Captain, a fintech company that closes the gap between homeowners, insurance companies and contractors following severe weather events. The company provides a lending tool to help homeowners choose a contractor and have repairs completed quickly, within 30 days instead of the usual 180.
To enable this, Captain provides contractors with tools to get through the claims process faster and easier, and vets the data coming from the insurance company. They also manage the interaction with the insurance carrier and other third parties and pay all of the bills for the work. With $104 million in funding recently raised, the company will expand their sales and engineering teams and look to target new cities. Specifically, cities that encounter a lot of hail including Chicago, Dallas and Denver. Additionally, they are preparing for California’s fire season by recruiting homebuilders and remediation contractors.
The goal of the company is to help policyholders put their life back together as quickly as possible and provide guided solutions when the unfortunate does occur. With the average homeowner insurance deductible being $1,000 and the average consumer having only $400 in savings, this tool is invaluable in helping people get back on their feet.
