Tackling roofing’s biggest moisture challenges

Vaproshield Tackling roofing’s biggest moisture challenges
September 17, 2024 at 9:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

A new approach to roofing offers solutions that could redefine industry standards.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Chris Meyer from VaproShield® to discuss the innovative technology behind SlopeShield®, a product designed to revolutionize how moisture is managed in commercial roofing. "Roughly 90% of condensation and moisture issues in a roofing envelope are due to air movement," Chris explains, expressing a critical problem many traditional systems fail to address adequately.

VaproShield, known for its advancements in wall barriers, is now extending its expertise to the roofing sector with SlopeShield, a permeable vapor retarder that provides a unique solution to moisture control. Unlike typical air barriers that might trap moisture, SlopeShield allows roofs to breathe, facilitating a controlled exchange of vapor while maintaining airtight integrity. Chris states, “Through its air-barrier characteristics, it cuts down on the majority of your problem from the get-go.”

In new constructions involving concrete, Chris notes that SlopeShield can be applied just five days after pouring — a significant time-saving advantage that also creates a controlled environment for the concrete to dry properly. This approach not only accelerates construction timelines but also contributes to the longevity of the roofing system by reducing moisture-related deterioration.

Chris further demonstrates SlopeShield’s potential to save costs and extend roof life by highlighting a recent re-roofing project. The product was used on an existing roof that had suffered from persistent moisture issues, leading to substantial savings for the client. “We actually came in, poked holes in the roof, put our stuff down... Within 47 days, that roof was,  from the inspector's choice of words, ‘bone dry,” Chris recounts, illustrating how SlopeShield can offer practical, transformative benefits for contractors and building owners alike.
