Steam Coil Cleaning Creates Big Savings for University

WTI Florida Sate University
September 18, 2023 at 9:00 a.m.

By Cayden Wemple.

With energy costs on the rise, Florida State University realized there was a critical deterrent that was keeping their energy costs up.

WTI-Pure Air Control Services, was entrusted with the critical task of cleaning the heavily soiled coils in Florida State University's HVAC systems across the entire campus. Upon realizing that the university had solely relied on the foam and rinse method for coil cleaning, WTI-Pure Air Control Services immediately recognized the need for a more effective solution and promptly opted for the advanced PURE-Steam method to tackle the job.

The previously employed foam and rinse method proved to be counterproductive, as it merely pushed residue and debris deeper into the coils. Consequently, this resulted in the unpleasant presence of a musty odor and a decline in airflow within the campus buildings, affecting the overall air quality. However, with the implementation of WTI-Pure Air Control Services' cutting-edge PURE-Steam process, a remarkable transformation was achieved. This innovative method not only thoroughly sanitized the coils but also successfully eliminated latent debris deeply embedded within them. As a result, the PURE-Steam process significantly improved air flow and greatly enhanced the cooling capacity of the buildings.

The introduction of the PURE-Steam process not only addressed the immediate cleaning needs but also brought about additional advantages. By efficiently improving air circulation and quality, this energy-saving procedure yielded substantial cost savings for the university. With an estimated reduction of approximately 0.22 cents per square foot, the university was able to optimize its budget while significantly enhancing the indoor air quality. Furthermore, the implementation of the PURE-Steam method minimized the need for HVAC-related work orders, streamlining operational efficiency even more.

The diligent efforts of the facilities staff at Florida State University in identifying the inefficiency of the previous cleaning method proved to be highly rewarding. Through their proactive approach, the university saved an impressive sum of approximately $800,000 in energy costs. The substantial financial savings not only benefited the institution but also provided students and teachers with a healthier learning and teaching environment. By improving indoor air quality and creating a conducive atmosphere, Florida State University prioritized the well-being and comfort of its community, enhancing the overall educational experience.
