Solar Power and Metal Roofing – a Match Made in Heaven!

S-5! Solar Power and Metal Roofing
September 21, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.

By Anna Lockhart.

S-5!® founder and CEO shares his insights on why metal roofers should consider offering solar panel installations for their metal roofing projects!

Rob Haddock, founder and CEO of S-5!, sat down with Heidi J. Ellsworth in a recent podcast interview to discuss the state of the industry, Q3 highlights and the exciting projects S-5! has in store for the upcoming year.

Rob’s original product concept from 1991 has led to the creation of various lines of quality attachments designed to support products like solar panels or snow guards being attached to standing seam roofs, without penetrating or altering the original design and structure of the roof. Since then, S-5! has continued to innovate and provide their customers with reliable, durable products specially curated for metal roofs.

As solar becomes more popular, he believes there is a good opportunity for metal roofers to learn how to work with solar and expand their business offerings, as the two go together well. Solar roof attachments have a lifespan of over thirty years, making metal roofs the best option as they have similar lifespans. Not only that, but many areas offer financial incentives to use solar.

“We're solarizing three of our S-5 facilities, one of them is complete, the other two are just getting started. But we're solarizing every one of them and the payback on two, on our plant, our warehouse down in Texas, was the day it was finished,” said Rob. “It was paid for one hundred percent with the incentives and the tax credits that were involved... So, people just don't believe it because like me, even if there are not incentives beyond the investment tax credit of 30%, even under those conditions, most systems will pay for themselves within six years.”

As solar becomes a more popular energy source for home and business owners across the United States, now is the time to consider taking advantage of the benefits of offering solar roof installations. As the world continues to evolve with technology, so does the roofing industry, and being open to the benefits of solar is one of those factors roofers can benefit from.
