Phyllis Powell cares for her adult brother, Dean Simmons, who has a disability. They live in his childhood home, but it has had a leaky roof for ‘years and years’ as Phyllis told Fox8. She suspects the leaks were related to a tornado in the area in the late 1990’s. The condition of the home had gotten so bad that Phyllis told Fox8 that they were ready to leave and go rent an apartment.
Friends nominated Phyllis and Dean for the roof giveaway being held by Skywalker Roofing. Dean is very well known in the community through his involvement with the Boy Scouts and the Lions Club. Community members voted for the family to win a new roof as part of Skywalker Roofing’s effort to help deserving residents who need new roofs.
Luke Wilson, owner of Skywalker Roofing said he got the idea to do a roof giveaway from another roofing contractor in Michigan. He told Fox8, “It makes you realize that this is why we are here, to help other people and to give back.”
As for the other finalists in the free roof giveaway, Luke said that their stories all inspired him so much that they are each going to receive a new roof.
