Contractors and homeowners have a lot of options when deciding what shingles to install on a home. Manufacturers are continually looking at different technologies and materials that can help a shingle perform longer and provide better protection from the elements – especially hail.
Owens Corning developed its Duration® Series shingle line with SureNail® patented technology that provides outstanding wind uplift performance. “We warranty our products to 130 miles an hour,” said Brian King, VP of strategic marketing for Owens Corning. “With Duration®, you've got three layers, and a reinforced layer as well, so it provides much, much better performance in wind.”
King says that contractors can see the performance themselves by taking the SureNail® challenge that the Owen Corning sales team developed. “Nail a SureNail® product down onto a deck, or a piece of wood, or even a two by four, and then try to pull the shingle off to see how strong it is,” he says. “Contractors can see the bigger and wider nail zone that is easier for crews to hit and they can see the performance provided by that triple layer protection.”
Brian explained that in addition to exceptional uplift performance the Duration® line has two products that use innovative technologies to deliver class four impact resistance to hail. “We have two impact-resistant shingles that use different technologies, and one of them is our Duration Storm® product. That has a reinforced layer scrim on the back which protects the roof and provides a class four hail rating. Then, we have the Duration Flex®, which uses a modified asphalt, which is a little bit more rubberized, and protects from a class four perspective that way.”
Homeowners really like the shingle because it offers a wide array of color options and contractors can guide them to the Design EyeQ® online visualization tool that Owens Corning offers. This tool allows homeowners to upload a photo of their home to try on different colors.
Owens Corning also helps contractors to sell virtually with a free web widget. Contractors can add the widget to their website and homeowners now have access to design and inspire tools, shingle color options and even information on how a roof works as a full system to protect homes from the elements.
