Renovate Robotics launches a groundbreaking robot designed to revolutionize roofing.

Renovate Robotics has unveiled Rufus, the world’s first automated roofing robot, marking a significant advancement in the roofing industry. Debuted at the International Roofing Exhibition (IRE), Rufus is designed to automate the asphalt shingle installation process, a task traditionally labor-intensive and hazardous. By doubling productivity and improving safety, Rufus could be a game-changer for an industry facing high fatality rates and labor shortages.

The need for such innovation is expressed by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, which reported roofing as having the second-highest fatality rate among all U.S. occupations in 2022. With these risks in mind, Rufus addresses both safety and efficiency concerns. Roofing contractors often face challenges in recruiting skilled labor and Renovate Robotics hopes to alleviate these pressures. “We’re empowering contractors to increase their revenue without scaling beyond their existing crews,” said Renovate Robotics. By automating parts of the roofing process, Rufus allows contractors to complete projects faster and with fewer workers, thus enhancing profitability.

Rufus stands out not only for its immediate impact but also for its future potential. The robot has a modular design and while its initial focus is on asphalt shingle installation, it has the capability to expand into other functions. Renovate’s roadmap includes plans for Rufus to handle shingle tear-off, cutting and even automated solar shingle installation. “We’re already making improvements to Rufus and will bring a lighter, faster and more reliable version to market in the spring of 2024,” said Andy Stulc, CEO of Renovate Robotics.

The company’s ambitions don’t stop there. Renovate plans to pilot Rufus on residential re-roofing projects and sees opportunities to enter the new construction and manufactured home sectors. Additionally, the company is exploring ways for Rufus to automate tasks related to solar system installations, such as bracket installation.

“This is just the beginning,” Andy added. “We have an exciting roadmap ahead of us and are excited to continue launching products that bring value to all parts of the roofing industry.”
