Roofing repairs for those in need

Roofing repairs for those in need
August 18, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.

By Hannah Ford.

Contractors donated their time and resources to support members of the community.

No matter what the profession, every homeowner eventually needs a new roof. Time and weather conditions can wear down a roof until it requires a replacement. Teachers, former Marines and other citizens need a helping hand every once and a while when it comes to repairing their homes. These roofers offer help where they can in this group effort to help the community thrive.

1 – Mason Company Roofing and Veteran Michael Turpin

Michael Turpin realized he needed a new roof when water began to seep into his home, highlighting the amount of damage the weather had done to his roof. “This roof on this house was 40 years old and leaking inside and it gave us the opportunity to get a brand- new roof put on there to stop all the leaks,” Michael told WDBJ.

After serving six years in the Marines, Michael deserved a new roof. Once Michael was selected for the Roofs for Troops program, Mason Company Roofing was able to solve his old roof problem for free. “Being recognized is a good thing, it helps the veterans. There’s a lot of veterans out there that need some help and I’m just glad they helped us. It means a lot,” said Michael. Mason Company Roofing donated their time and labor while GAF donated the necessary supplies to replace Michael’s roof. Giving back to the people who served their country have been a priority for Mason Company Roofing which is why they created their new program.

2 - Ultimate Roofing and Rebecca Butler

When Rebecca Butler, a local teacher, entered a contest to win a new roof, she never imagined she would win. But after Rebecca attended a trade show, she received a call from Ultimate Roofing saying she had won a free roof. When asked about how she felt about getting a new roof, she told WDTV, “I mean, that’s a huge weight off my shoulders in getting that done, just for the safety and security of the house.”

As a preschool teacher at Watson Elementary in Fairmont, West Virginia, Rebecca didn’t have much time to update her roof.  Mike Hamilla, the sales manager with Ultimate Roofing said, “We’ve been really thankful that we were able to help Rebecca out and get her a new roof replacement, so it’s been an exciting process.” This was Ultimate Roofing’s first time trying this initiative and it was very successful.

3 - Rebuilding Together and Sherry Deleu-Bunch

Rebuilding Together is a project where tradesmen volunteer their time and energy to serve members of the community. Over 350 tradesmen have come together to help repair homes in South Bend. Sherry Deleu-Bunch is one homeowner who, after recently experiencing personal family deaths, was helped by the Rebuilding Together initiative. Sherry explained to WSBT, “I just can't do the things I used to do because of my health. Because if my health was good. I would be up there with them."

The support Sherry received after the recent hardships was profound. "I am very, very proud and happy for this community, the neighborhood. There's a bunch of wonderful people that live in this area, and I got lucky," Sherry said. The local contractors banded together to make others proud to live in their community.

4 – Monarch Roofing and Marine McNeil "Mac" Barr

Once a year Monarch Roofing selects a veteran in need with their Shelter for Veterans program. McNeil “Mac” Barr had been needing a new roof and was selected to have his roof replaced. “I had the worst-looking roof in the neighborhood. I'm sure when people drive by, they say, 'Look at that roof. Brings the neighborhood down.' Now I'm going to have the best-looking roof in the neighborhood, I'm sure. I feel really good about that. I really do,” Mcneil said to ABC 15 News. Monarch Roofing wants to make their roof donation program a monthly effort to support even more veterans in need.
