Roofers Jump Into Action to Save Others

Roofers Jump Into Action to Save
August 3, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.

By Lauren White.

Two children are rescued from a burning building by heroic roofers.

A fire devastated the Courtyard Apartments in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Construction workers were installing a new roof on the building adjacent to the apartments that caught fire.  Working in the right place at the right time, the crew didn’t hesitate to do their part and help those in need.

According to KOAT Action News, “Brothers Mason Fierro and Jermaine Gallien said they saw a man screaming for help from a second story window.”  As the crew was bringing ladders over to the building, Fierro saw the man holding his two month old baby and instructed him to drop the baby into his arms.  “He dropped her. I caught her. Then they bring out another little boy, two or three years old, then we caught him as well,” Fierro said.

The crew continued to work and help others.  They used their ladders to get the parents out safely.  “Fierro said they only waited long enough to make sure the family was ok, then they started going door to door to get everyone else out,” KOAT reported.  They continued to do this until the firefighters arrived. Fierro explained, “We had each other’s back, and it was just an all-in thing.”

Gallien couldn’t be prouder of his brother.  He shared, “Just seeing him catch that baby girl and baby boy, it touched me.  He stepped up and really became the hero of the day.” The father thanked Fierro for saving his two children, which was enough recognition for him.  In his interview with KOAT, Fierro said, “He might not remember my name or my face, but he knows that somebody helped and that’s all I care about.”

These unsung heroes in their yellow construction vests saved the lives of not only two children, but of numerous people in the apartment building.  Fierro told KOAT that, “...he couldn’t have done it without his brother and the rest of the crew running over to help him…” The family may have lost their home, but at least they didn’t lose each other thanks to the roofers next door.
