The Western Roofing Expo is set to take place September 20-23 at The Mirage in Las Vegas and features several educational sessions from the Cotney team.
8:45 a.m. - Empowering Your Field Leaders
John Kenney, COO for Cotney Attorneys & Consultants, has over 45 years of experience in the roofing industry, working for top 100 roofing companies as he climbed the ladder. In this course. John will share with both subcontractors and contractors an overview of proper training methods that empower front line supervisors. He will discuss ways to improve revenue and profit by crew leaders, as well as the effective outcomes on safety, quality, production and project obligations.
10:15 a.m. - Navigating Material Volatility and Supply Chain Issues.
Cotney CEO Trent Cotney, who serves as legal counsel for WSRCA, has been serving the roofing industry since 1999 and has been recognized as one of the leading attorneys in this field and the construction industry. He has received numerous honors and distinctions and is general counsel for many other associations.
The seminar will provide roofing contractors with an overview of how to handle bottlenecks and shortages in the supply chain, a prevalent problem in the current business environment. Cotney will focus on the most pertinent provisions roofers need to include in contracts to protect their business. He will also go over how to negotiate price increases and time extensions for existing contracts.

Trent and John have both been collecting roofing memorabilia for years, with over 10,000 pieces in their collection. They will discuss history from thatch to monolithic and everything in between. Cotney and Kenney will bring historic photos, advertisements and specification manuals as part of their presentation.
8:45 a.m. - The Science of Rooftop Safety: What Companies Need to Know.
Whitney Jackson-Beasley, Cotney’s director of operations and sales, will speak as part of this panel sponsored by National Women in Roofing. In this session, the panel will discuss the hierarchy of controls and factors to consider when reviewing company safety culture. It will also include information on customer safety and communication. Panelists will additionally go over the importance of proper fitting PPE for women.
8:45 a.m. - OSHA Inspection & Citation Process.
Kyle Rea joined Cotney in 2017 and works as the firm’s internal compliance officer. He practices in the areas of construction law, lien law, bond law, contract review and drafting, as well as contract negotiation and litigation.
Kyle will inform and teach contractors and subcontractors how to improve workplace safety and talk about workplace safety programs. He will discuss how to document employee safety training, what to expect during an OSHA compliance officer inspection and what actions subcontractors and contractors must take.
10:15 a.m. - Legal Issues when Using Subcontractors on Projects
Trent Cotney will educate contractors on the legal issues that may arise when using subcontractors and how to navigate those issues. The seminar will also discuss employee classification, as well as how to handle multi-employer worksites with OSHA, subcontractor licensure and contract provisions to protect a business.
