Meet Nick Salvatore, owner of J. Salvatore & Sons, Inc., and the recent winner of the DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor 2023 Project of the Year Award.

When Greenwich Custom Homes crafted the DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor 2023 Project of the Year Winner they went big. Really big. The 13,000 square-foot Georgian Colonial home in Connecticut has a large footprint. And an even larger pricetag. $15.9 million.

Overview: 2023 Project of the Year

When it came time to put a roof on top of this gorgeous custom home, Nick Salvatore and the team from J. Salvatore & Sons, Inc. were ready. The DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor was committed to making the home into his own masterpiece.

“The DaVinci Multi-Width Slate tiles in the Smokey Gray color are the perfect complement for this home’s design style,” says Nick. “The tiles are extremely authentic-looking. The homeowners will have the realistic look of slate, but will never be concerned with damage from storms, cracking or splitting over time.”

The lightweight DaVinci tiles are modeled from actual slate for natural, non-repeating beauty. Each tile is made from pure virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers, plus a highly-specialized fire retardant. The result is a tile that’s Class A fire resistant. In addition, each 12”-wide tile resists impact, insects, fading and cracking.

“The developer of this project is my brother, Joe Granitto with Greenwich Custom Homes,” says Nick. “He understands that adding real slate to a structure means adding substantially to the infrastructure of the home.

“However, when using the lightweight DaVinci product, we get the best of all worlds. The look of actual slate with so many more features and benefits than real slate offers. And, no heavy infrastructure needed for the roof.

“In addition, DaVinci offers a Lifetime Limited Material Warranty. That’s something the homeowner will find valuable for decades to come. Whenever we sell and install a DaVinci roof, our customers are especially pleased with that vote of confidence from the manufacturer.”

Insights from a winning roofer

Based in Yonkers, New York, J. Salvatore & Sons Roofing has been in business for more than a century. Nick shares some insights about his career and how the company uses composite roofing to meeting the needs of their customers throughout the northeast.

Q: How did you get started in the roofing business?

I’m a third generation roofer. My family has been in the roofing business since my grandfather started the company back in 1921.

Q: What makes your company recommend DaVinci products over competitive composite products?

The DaVinci products have a proven track record for us. Plus, they offer a superior look.

Q: How have DaVinci products helped increase sales for your company?

The composite products allow for a slate look on a home that was not built to withstand the weight of conventional slate. That’s an attractive selling point.

Q: When selling DaVinci products to a new customer, what are the features and benefits that customers react best to?

The ability to maintain a historical look with the composite slate at a reasonable price.

Q: What made you think that this particular project would be a winning candidate for the DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor Project of the Year Award?

This house has a full hip roof, which allows for the beautiful roof to be appreciated from all sides. It’s a winner from every angle!

Q: What’s your dream roofing job?

Some sort of historical high profile building that would have our roof on it for the next century!

Q: Finally, if you absolutely had to change professions tomorrow, what do you think you’d do?

Easy. A real estate developer!
