Meet Landon Coggins, owner of Apex Home Solutions and the recent winner of the DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor 2023 Project of the Year Award.

Roofer Landon Coggins recently figured out a way to double his business on a project. At the same time he made his client exceptionally happy by solving a major problem.

What’s the magic solution Landon offered? The realization that composite products are just as resilient and beautiful on the sides of a home as they are on the roof. The end result of this recommendation led to an oceanfront home so beautiful that it was named a DaVinci Roofscapes Masterpiece Contractor 2023 Project of the Year Award Winner

Overview: 2023 Project of the Year

Located in Seaside, Oregon, the home belonging to Jeff Bergren included real cedar shake siding and roofing. When the homeowner contacted Apex Home Solutions, he was looking for relief from constant maintenance from the deteriorating shakes. Fortunately he’d already had positive experiences with DaVinci roofing, so he knew what to ask for.

“We have two homes in Texas with DaVinci roofs on them,” says Jeff Bergren. “They’re in great shape. Those composite roofs hold up against the potential of hail, heat, cold and high winds. It’s a durable, maintenance-free product with lots of curb appeal. It’s exactly the kind of easy-care product I need for my Oregon home!”

Landon came in and expanded on Jeff's request. Along with the Select Shake roof he recommended, Landon also suggested DaVinci Hand-Split Shake Siding for the home. Both in an Aged Cedar color to complement the entire exterior of the property.

“These products raised the value and curb appeal of the Bergren’s home,” says Landon. “At the same time, the homeowners don’t have to worry about maintenance issues when they’re not here. And, because of all the assets of the DaVinci products, there’s a very good chance they’ll get a significant discount on their homeowner’s insurance.”

Insights from a winning roofer

Located in the Portland, Oregon area, Apex Home Solutions is a woman-owned, veteran-led business, with Melissa and Landon Coggins leading the company. Here Landon shares some insights about his career, along with his thoughts on working with authentic-looking composite roofing products on West Coast projects.

Q: How did you get started in the roofing business?

Like many people, I started in construction back in high school when I painted and framed houses. After graduating I went into the National Guard, then worked as a paint representative, and after that I ran a flooring company for 10 years. I was a lead estimator for an exterior company before Melissa and I started APEX six years ago.

Q: What makes your company recommend DaVinci products over competitive composite products?

DaVinci has exceptional customer service and attention-to-detail when it comes to making their product attractive, realistic looking and exceptionally durable. Their Hand-Split Shake Siding has really proven to solve a big problem on the Oregon Coast for us. We’re currently transforming a lot of projects all up and down the coastline using this product.

Q: How have DaVinci products helped increase sales for your company?

As the DaVinci products become more well known, and we continue installing them, our phones ring more and more. People are paying attention to the beauty and super low maintenance associated with these products, which helps us to sell them.

Q: When selling DaVinci products to a new customer, what are the features and benefits that customers react best to?

First of all, the performance. The fact that you never have to paint or reseal the DaVinci products is a big plus in our environment. Second, the UV stabilizers assure that the color you pick is the color you keep, which is a big asset in this area where the sun is so strong. People appreciate that from a cost standpoint that these two things will save them money and headaches over the years. Finally, you can’t beat the natural appearance of these composite products.

Q: What made you think that this particular project would be a winning candidate for the DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor Project of the Year Award?

Both the setting of the home — sitting right on the northern Oregon coast — and also the house having both DaVinci roofing and siding, makes this project extra special.

Q: What’s your dream roofing job?

I would love to do a large historic church with a DaVinci roof and turret package one day!

Q: Finally, if you absolutely had to change professions tomorrow, what do you think you’d do?

Ahh … this is always fun to think about! I would probably get my license to be a home inspector. However, if I were taller/younger/more athletic, then I would want to play professional basketball!
