Resilient Roofing Starts With the Right Cover Board

By Evelyn Witterholt.

For low-slope roofs, protecting from the most common forms of roof damage begins with  including a durable coverboard in your roof assembly.

When a building owner is getting a new roof, they want one that is built-to-last. These projects can be quite costly, so they won’t want a roof that requires them to call their roofing contractor back for additional repairs. This article from Retrofit Magazine details exactly why building owners should want roofs that are designed better than code and will last for a long time.

In the article, Jim Schneider writes that building a roof that will last starts with the right materials, namely a cover board. Roof cover boards, like the DensDeck® roof board from Georgia-Pacific Building Products, are a thin and rigid substrate that the roof membrane adheres to. Jim states that they are a great addition to a roofing system that helps reduce the risk of damage from severe storms, fires and hail.

“When considering the potential expense of a major roof repair or replacement and potential closures or damage to the building, cover boards can be a worthy addition,” he says.

When deciding what kind of roofing system they might want, the first thing on a building owner’s mind is cost. Repairing or replacing a roof is expensive and a building owner will be looking for the most economical option. Jim encourages contractors and consultants to talk about the long-term cost of a quality roofing system versus a lower quality roof.

Investing in a high-quality product like  DensDeck roof board can save a building owner more money in the future. “DensDeck Roof Boards have a strong, non-combustible gypsum core to help protect commercial roofs from wind, fire, puncture and hail,” he says. “It makes sense to make upfront investments in items like roof cover boards to ensure continuous operation for the owner and occupants.”
