Reflecting a Sustainable Future

CRRC Sustainable Future
August 23, 2023 at 9:00 a.m.

By Adam Cabrera.

Cool roofs can mitigate urban heat islands and are a sustainable construction option.

For 25 years, the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) has been at the forefront of promoting sustainable and energy-efficient practices within the roofing industry. In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth had the chance to chat with Rich Slomko and Jeffrey Stueben, two experts from the CRRC. In their conversation they shed light on the organization's history, its advancements, and what the future holds.

Cool roofs are a powerful solution to mitigate urban heat islands, reduce energy consumption and contribute to a more sustainable future. Reflecting sunlight rather than absorbing it, these roofs have become an essential aspect of modern construction.

CRRC, established in 1998, is a nonprofit organization that brings stakeholders from various fields together to address these critical environmental challenges. Through ratings, research and education, they’ve made significant strides, including developing standards for radiative property measurements and expanding their focus to exterior walls.

Rich, the chair of the board of directors for CRRC, emphasized their commitment to progress through creating standards. "We're not just roofs, we're roofs and walls... We're still looking at other ways that we can help rate materials, which is what we do. We are a rating organization," he said.

Looking ahead, the CRRC's updated strategic plan outlines how they will continue to be a pivotal player in promoting sustainability and environmental awareness. In reference to the CRRC annual meeting that happened in June of this year, Jeffrey, the executive director of CRRC, said, "We're going to be seeing a lot of updates on the organization and we like to try to give everybody a sense of what the CRRC is working on."

Whether you are a seasoned industry professional or new to the field, the CRRC's commitment to innovation, education and collaboration makes it an organization worth exploring. You can learn more and even get involved through the CRRC's website, contributing to a future where cool roofs play an even more significant role in our global environment.
