Rebuilding Lives One Roof at a Time

CertainTeed Rebuilding lives one roof at a time
May 9, 2019 at 6:00 a.m.

By Vicky Gallagher.

CertainTeed was honored with the distinguished Crystal Vision Award for their support of World Vision.

For the past 19 years during the International Builders’ Show, World Vision has invited their current and potential business partners to join them for their Crystal Vision Awards Breakfast.

There is always an industry-leader who starts things off with an overarching business perspective on the upcoming year. This year Craig Webb, former editor at ProSales, told the packed room that the housing market will continue to see a slowdown in 2019 but that home remodeling will continue to improve. His company, Webb Analytics, provides insights, data, and connections to help construction supply insiders and investors make better decisions.

The breakfast is always a good time and a chance to network with old friends. This year attendees were surprised by unexpected guests, the Property Brothers, who were on hand to help give out the Crystal Vision Award which was awarded to Crossville, Inc. This award is given to a manufacturing company that has supported The Storehouse program of World Vision in the following areas:

  • Consistent and significant product donation for a minimum of five years.
  • Supporter, participant, and a sponsor of the Crystal Vision Award event.
  • Promoter of the Crystal Vision Award event and The Storehouse program within the building industry.

CertainTeed proudly accepted this award in 2017.

Other awards are also given to partners and individuals who go above and beyond to help support the mission of the World Vision Storehouse.

But most importantly, it is an opportunity for the organization to thank all its business partners and to highlight some of the good that their financial support and product donations provided to people in need across America. It can be hard to imagine just what that need looks like from our corporate headquarters.

CertainTeed and WorldVision

For CertainTeed the theme of ‘rebuilding lives’ is a strong part of our corporate social responsibility platform. Our corporate partnership with World Vision is a perfect example of that. CertainTeed provides vital materials to keep a safe, well-functioning roof over families who can’t afford to replace their failing or damaged one.

CertainTeed began its partnership with World Vision in 2011 donating asphalt singles and other roofing products to the World Vision Building Materials Storehouses. The storehouses provide building materials for families and communities unable to afford to repair or replace homes damaged by storms, fires, or simply age.

How the Program Works

According to World Vision about 450 businesses donate to the Building Materials Storehouses on an ongoing basis. World Vision works with manufacturers to take product donations and store them in warehouses across the country to be used when disaster strikes. The increased frequency and severity of weather events makes it even more difficult for people living in poverty to recover from a natural disaster. These facilities are located strategically around the country to get products where they are needed quickly.

The main storehouses are located in:

  • Appalachia, West Virginia; Chicago, Illinois; Greater New York; Hartford, Connecticut; North Texas and the Pacific Northwest (Washington)

Satellite sites are located in:

  • Albany, Georgia; Crossville, Tennessee; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Washington, D.C; Yakima, Washington

Whether it is a community wrecked by a storm or a single homeowner who is not able to repair damages to his home, thanks to World Vision and their building partners someone will be there to rebuild and restore.

The breakfast each year is a nice reminder of that.

More about World Vision:

World Vision is a humanitarian organization working globally to help those in need by ‘pulling up the roots of poverty and planting seeds of change.’ Established in 1950, World Vision works in nearly 100 countries providing aid, support, education, training and relief to help communities develop the perfect recipe for sustainable success.

CertainTeed and our parent company Saint-Gobain share the belief that ‘we do well by doing good.’ That concept drives our philanthropic decisions both as a corporation and in how we hope our employees will respond within their communities.
