One of the many ways the Western States Roofing Contractors Association (WSRCA) likes to bring roofing industry members together is through their podcast, “The Roof Deck.” The podcast is hosted by Jackson Johns from National Roofing Company, Rachel Garcia from Malarkey Roofing Products and Shane Wakerling from General Roofing Company, all young roofing professionals.
In a recent episode, they spoke with Heidi J. Ellsworth, president of RoofersCoffeeShop®, about the current state of the roofing industry. They discussed a variety of topics including the impacts of COVID-19 on the industry, Roofing Day in D.C. and issues involving labor shortages.
On the podcast, Heidi discusses her background in roofing which spans nearly 30 years. She talks about the journey she made through the roofing industry that started at Malarkey Roofing Products and has now led her to being the president of RCS!
“RoofersCoffeeShop is actually celebrating its 20th anniversary this year,” she said. “We were online in 2002 before Facebook or YouTube.”
Heidi also discusses the labor shortage crisis within the industry and how technology is a possible solution to some of these shortages. Both her and RCS COO Karen Edwards are a part of the Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3), a group of industry leaders who explore new roofing technology. She discusses the various new roofing technologies that have been introduced to them that the industry may see more of in the future.
“We're seeing a lot of technology coming in,” she says. “We're seeing robotics...they're talking about drones nailing shingles on. I don't know when that's going to happen, but it's definitely been discussed.”
