There is no denying what effect the passage of time will have on a home’s roof. Scotchgard™ Protector keep your customers’ roofs looking beautiful longer.

by Carrie Niezgocki, 3M

Roof age can be apparent when unsightly black streaks caused by algae appear. Roof replacement is a considerable investment of time and money and Malarkey shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector can help prevent those black streaks and keep your customers’ roofs looking beautiful longer.

A Trusted Brand Since 1956, Scotchgard™ Protector has been a name you can trust. The first version was discovered by 3M research chemist Patsy Sherman in a fortuitous accident where a bottle of synthetic latex spilled onto an assistant’s shoes. She was fascinated that the invisible layer was resilient to solvent removal and repelled water and other liquids. Several decades later the the brand extends its promise to protect in a variety of solutions from sprays that repel water and block stains on fabric, furniture, carpet and automotive interiors to paint protective films that preserve the showroom quality finish on your vehicle. For roofing, Malarkey shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector help prevent black streaks caused by algae allowing the beauty of the roof to shine through.

A Strong Formula Shingles are susceptible to black streaks caused by algae, especially in humid climates. 3M scientists have solved this problem with the proven protection of Scotchgard™ Protector. Malarkey shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector are manufactured with a scientifically proven concentration of copper-containing roofing granules to provide sufficient coverage of copper ions over the entire surface of the shingle, inhibiting the growth of the algae that causes black streaks. The solution was developed by 3M over 20 years ago, and was assigned the Scotchgard™ Protector brand in 2002. Malarkey produced the first shingle with 3M Algae Block in 1994 and was the first manufacturer to receive the brand designation for algae resistant shingles in 2003.

3M research shows that a minimum of 10% copper-containing granules, uniformly distributed across both the shingle surface and the hip & ridge, help prevent black streaks cause by algae. All Malarkey shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector are tested by a third-party laboratory to ensure they contain a minimum 10% copper-containing granules.

A Steadfast Connection The decision on what shingles to install on the roof can be complex. By selecting Malarkey shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector, your customers can enjoy a roof free from black streaks for up to 20 years. The original style and beauty of the shingles chosen is protected by a brand you can trust.
