Tedlar® film's remarkable resistance offers long-lasting surface protection at the southwest border.

From aerospace and transportation to graphics and signage and building and construction, Tedlar® film’s proven performance offers a solution that helps transform industries and everyday life. And now border protection can be added to the list of uses. Tedlar® film helps protect a Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS), which is frequently used by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to detect and track illicit air activities along the southwest border, such as threats from ultralight and short landing aircraft.

Tedlar® is a film made from polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) developed by DuPont™. This film has been engineered for superior surface protection and is known for its long-lasting durability and performance in extreme environments. Offering protection for interior and exterior architectural applications, Tedlar® film is highly flexible and resistant to cracking and corrosion, impervious to harsh chemicals, resistant to the growth of mold and bacteria, resilient against stains and is easily cleanable due to its stain resistance, which is why it is a trusted product across a variety of industries.

ILC Dover manufactured this helium-filled balloon system knowing that it needed to endure environmental extremes. Thanks to Tedlar®'s durability and resistance to harsh weather and chemicals, the system is protected and will maintain its fresh, white look for years. The system’s complex setup includes mooring and tether controls, command stations, a data distribution network and maintenance facilities, all working together to maintain border security.

The Tedlar® film assures longevity by providing a protective layer against UV damage and staining, significantly reducing maintenance while preserving the aerostat’s appearance. The durable Tedlar® film keeps the aerostat looking new and protects it from extreme weather, chemical damage, and UV wear. Tedlar® acts as a tough shield, keeping the aerostat in working order and good condition for years to come, which means it doesn't need frequent repairs or upkeep.

By using high-quality Tedlar® film, this Tethered Aerostat Radar System will remain protected and ensure its lasting performance, which is vital for the important role it plays in national security and monitoring borders.
