In a Roofing Road Trips® episode, Heidi J. Ellsworth conversed with Eric Younkin, vice president of products and engineered services at MTL Holdings, a parent company of HYPERLINK "https://www.rooferscoffeeshop.com/directory/metal-era"Metal-Era s, about the significant strides they’re taking to integrate technology and the risk mitigation factors they’re implementing through building codes. They discuss the relationship between innovative manufacturing techniques and adherence to building codes. Hickman Edge Systems, about the significant strides they’re taking to integrate technology and the risk mitigation factors they’re implementing through building codes. They discuss the relationship between innovative manufacturing techniques and adherence to building codes.
MTL Holdings is revolutionizing the industry by integrating robotics into 65% of its production processes. "It's very consistent. That's where we get our speed. That helps us build our inventory,” Eric explains. This use of technology not only enhances precision and quality but also helps address the labor shortage.
According to Eric, “65% is done robotically and managed through a minimal number of folks in the shop. Then that allows the other folks to go out and do the accessories and the other custom parts,”
Not only is MTL Holdings taking strides to integrate technology and combat the labor shortage, but they’re also putting an emphasis on the importance of building codes and risk mitigation for roofing projects. According to some insurance companies, “a vast majority, 60%, [of roof failure] is caused by perimeter edge failure. And there's some insurance companies that have built in their mitigation strategy by mandating you have to meet certain requirements,” Eric shares. “So really risk mitigation, controlling the exposure and the amount of failures comes down to proper design and proper installation.” And MTL Holdings is dedicated to finding ways to mitigate risk and ensuring their products have all the components necessary to meet their specific codes when being installed.
One example of how important building codes are coming from a facility in Pearl, Mississippi that was equipped with MTL Holdings' edge metal products that had been ES1 tested. And this building remarkably withstood a tornado, proving the life-saving potential of rigorous testing and compliance. Eric shares, “That's the intent to provide a longer-lasting system and really to mitigate your risk. And that risk is everything from dollars to lives and lives being more important.”
