Six families in Marshalltown, Iowa will receive new roofs on their homes between now and the end of 2020, at no cost to them. Feller Roofing partnered with GAF and Habitat for Humanity of Iowa to complete this project. Habitat for Humanity identifies the families in need who are unable to afford a new roof themselves. Matt Gannaway, Feller Roofing regional manager told the Times-Republican, “GAF is donating the materials and we are donating the labor.”
As a GAF Master Elite and Certified Contractor, Feller Roofing is eligible to participate in the donation program. “We are thrilled not only to be able to offer this contribution to an organization creating affordable housing, but also to be able to reinforce the efforts of our Master Elite and Certified Contractors as they strive to support the communities in which they live and work,” said Jim Slauson, vice president of GAF Certified Programs and Services.
“GAF and Habitat for Humanity do a lot to give back to communities...A new roof is a big investment and an expensive one. A lot of families are not able to afford it and they could use an extra helping hand,” Matt shared.
The roofs that are needing to be replaced were not damaged due to natural disasters, such as hail damage or the tornado that hit in July 2018. If that had been the case, insurance would have covered the replacement. This is yet another reason Matt and those involved are compelled to give back.
One roof replacement took place last month while the five remaining roofs will be completed in the spring and summer of 2020. While winter doesn’t present the most ideal weather conditions for roofing, the first re-roof was completed due to the amount of leaking the family was experiencing. Matt expressed, “The family could use the roof because they have interior work that needs to be done.” And they wanted to help the family out.
Those selected by Habitat for Humanity to receive a new roof are able to choose the colors of the metals and the shingles. It is estimated that each roof replacement will cost between $8,000 and $10,000 and will take two days. Typically there are seven or eight people on the roofing crew. Matt’s hope is that “church and community groups will volunteer in the effort during the warmer months,” he told the Times-Republican.
It’s the season of giving and GAF, Feller Roofing, and Habitat for Humanity are doing just that, and extending it into next year. The six families in Marshalltown will be able to enjoy the benefits of having a new roof over their heads. Matt explains, “We just want to help out our community.”
