New Roof on Elementary School Gets an A+

Tubos Elementary School 2023
July 16, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.

By TUBOS.

This elementary school in Tampa got a roof makeover, complete with new vent stack extensions.

Dale Mabry Elementary School has been open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade since 1949. The school is named after Dale Mabry, a U.S. Army Captain who served in World War I. Although the school initially only had nine classrooms, in the late 1980s, it got a major renovation that added several buildings and even a bell tower. Dale Mabry Elementary is an “A rated” school, recognized for its excellent academic program and staff.

Recently, the multi-building facility had a new 93,000 square foot roof installed. The roofing system was specified by PBA Design Group, a full-service architectural firm based in Tampa, that specializes in new construction and renovation work including exterior building envelope restoration and roof replacements.

The new roof was installed by R.F. Lusa Roofing and Sheetmetal of Lakeland, Florida, which specializes in new and re-roofing projects for a wide variety of building types including educational facilities.

The roofing work included tearing off the built-up roofing system, which was installed in the late 1980s, and at the end of its effective service life, and installing a new two-ply SBS Modified Bitumen roofing system over the various roof decks on the school facility, which included concrete, lightweight concrete, steel and wood. The project also included installing up to four layers of polyisocyanurate insulation and a GAF SecurRock cover board, which gave it an average R-value of 25, as well as installing the TUBOS Vent Stack Extensions, the fastest and easiest way keep vent stacks within code compliance height.

The project was complex and challenging with lots of rooftop equipment and difficult access to many of the roofing areas, and took the R.F. Lusa crew of 12, about five months to complete. However, in the end the home of the “Mighty Dolphins” is secure from water and the elements and will be for years to come.
