“The buildings have been on campus for over 100 years,” said Malarkey South Dakota Sales Rep, Mark Hausman. The roofs were specified by the university for 170 squares of Malarkey’s durable Windsor® XL polymer modified asphalt roofing shingle. “These are only the second roofs ever put on the two buildings,” added Hausman.
Roofing Historic Buildings
Both Wenona and Wecota Halls were designed by Sioux Falls architect John J. Schwartz according to the university, and are “fine examples of the neoclassical style and significant for their representation of early 20th century academic architecture in a campus setting.”
Wenona, named after the firstborn maiden in an Indian family, was built in 1909 and served as the first women's dormitory on campus. Wecota, named after the second maiden in an Indian family, was soon followed in 1915. This building served, respectively, as the second women's dormitory on campus. By May 7, 1980, the U.S. Department of Interior added both halls to the National Register of Historic Places.
Windsor® XL for Elegance and Performance
Windsor® XL heavyweight designer shingles are an additional 20 percent thicker than Windsor® shingles, with a 17 percent increase in overall mass. This extra thickness creates a more pronounced, elevated appearance to the roof. The thicker shingle also creates more shadowing between the shingles to draw sharp, distinctive lines on the roof.
The Windsor® is a shingle fortified with Malarkey’s unique Flexor™ SBS polymer modified asphalt technology. Manufactured to retain more of the rubber-like characteristics of raw asphalt, Flexor™ polymer modified asphalt adds the enhanced characteristics of the polymers for impact resistance.
Flexor™ also provides superior Class 4 impact resistance - the highest rating possible - for roofing shingle protection. Class 4 shingles undergo UL 2218 testing to withstand impacts from a simulated 2" hail stone hitting a roof at speeds seen in severe storms without sustaining damage. This certification defends against impacts to a roof during extreme weather, which can reduce the life of a shingle and lead to water damage.
Only Week’s Work
Out of Hartford, James Hofer, the owner and operator of his eponymous construction company, was the lead contractor on the job. The large project, including tear-off, took only seven days for the crew. “Surprisingly, it wasn’t in too bad of shape considering the age of the roof,” said Hofer. Only obstacles faced were “the very large air intake vents on the roof and fixing the flashing had to do some custom builds and solder some of the copper on the roof.”
New to Malarkey Roofing Products with this job, Hofer “liked the fact that they seal down great and that you can put them on left to right and right to left, which helped speed up our application on this roof as we had 10 guys on the roof at all times,” he said. In addition to the Windsor XL shingles, the crew used the both the Windsor® and Smart Start™ Starter shingles as well as the EZ-Ridge™ XT.
By completion, Dean Kattelmann, Associate Vice President of Facilities and Services at the university, said he was satisfied with the product. In fact, Malarkey’s popular Vista™ shingle is now slated for two more roofs on campus for a new student housing project called, ‘The Neighborhoods.'
