At RoofersCoffeeShop® (RCS), we love giving away prizes and then learning about the people who win! Mike King was a recent winner of the Answer Me This! question of the week. Answer Me This! is sponsored by The Gibraltar Building Accessories Division as part of their ‘Construction Solutions’ campaign designed to supply feedback from contractors to help them continue to innovate.
Mike only recently joined the roofing industry when he starting working at Missouri Builders Service in 2019. Before that he was a union sheet metal contractor for 15 years where he did a lot of industrial work, heavy metal work, and welding.
“Long story short, I was working as a project manager for a company and after 15 years I felt it was in my best interest to start a new pursuit and I moved to Jefferson City,” explained Mike. “I started working with Missouri Builder Service in March 2019.”
Mike managed to stay under the radar for about three months before they learned more about his work experience. “I stared working under a second-year apprentice, and he was responsible for my direction,” said Mike. “After being a project manager, it was nice to be able to unload only concentrate on getting the physical work done. After a few months in the field they learned more about my background, and I was pulled into the shop so they could see what I knew.”
Today, he is a foreman at the company and shared that he worked on the Jesse Hall Dome Renovation at University of Missouri. “The dome is made out of sheet metal, so it was a lot of replacing rotten galvanized metal and soldering in new stainless-steel brush finish number four panels,” shared Mike. “We did some lead dental work on the top of it. It had some ornate details.”
Mike said he really enjoys roofing saying, “In the industrial world, everything was temporary until the new line whet in. With architecture it is staying and its forever. There is still craftmanship tied into the roofing trade. Our company does a lot of higher end scale work and it’s rewarding to be able to stand back and have something you are proud of.”
Mike said he did not know about RoofersCoffeeShop before finding the Answer Me This! question while he was updating his information on his LinkedIn profile. “I came across the question and clicked through to answer. Next thing I know I was the winner and talking to you guys,” he said.
When he’s not working, Mike is enjoying rebuilding a 1979 Jeep CJ7 and says he is a woodsman, enjoying fishing and camping with his wife and kids.
