MBTechnology is Meeting the Demand for Energy-efficient Roofing

MBTechnology Energy Efficient Roofing

By Colin Sheehan, RCS Reporter.

Metalflex SBS membranes offer unparalleled performance, with up to 75% solar reflectivity.

MBTechnology created the Metalflex SBS modified bitumen membrane to address the growing demand for energy-efficient roofing systems. While a roof’s main function is to be a protective barrier from the weather, it shouldn’t be limited to that single task. Especially as technology continues to evolve, roofing systems should also be pursuing innovation. Cool roofing is an example of creative problem solving that aids in temperature control, energy efficiency and energy savings.

Metalflex SBS elastomeric membrane is a modified bitumen cool roofing solution that works. It’s manufactured with an embossed foil surfacing and reinforced with woven fiberglass mat. The membrane is available in both standard and colored aluminum and the aluminum top surface shields roofs with amazing reflectivity and weatherability properties. The Metalflex SBS is also Class A fire rated over combustible decks with no slope restrictions.

There are a variety of Metalflex SBS elastomeric membranes available, one of which is the Metalflex SBS Cool White 24 which offers supreme reflectivity, reflecting 75% of solar energy away from the roof. This white, reflective and aluminum SBS modified bitumen membrane exceeds requirements set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR® standard and the Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings.

Additionally, the unique foil-faced surface on Metalflex absorbs significantly less heat than traditional roofing systems and aids in the reduction of a building's energy consumption. This allows building owners to save money, as most buildings with Metalflex only need a small air conditioning unit.

Over insulated deck, a two-ply configuration is used for the application of Metalflex SBS. Over wood or light weight concrete, a three-ply configuration is used. Metalflex can be applied using a hot asphalt or heat-welded application.

A handful of downloadable information is available for all contractors interested in using Metalflex SBS. These downloads include specification information, a Metalflex SBS brochure and Metalflex SBS application manual. The manual is in both English and Spanish.
