The award was presented at NRCA’s 133rd Annual Convention held Feb. 2-6 in Dallas. The J.A. Piper award is the industry's most prestigious honor, recognizing roofing professionals who have devoted constant outstanding service to NRCA and the roofing industry.
Gaulin was elected to NRCA's board of directors in 1993 and served three terms, including two terms as vice president from 1998-2000 and 2003-05. He also served as NRCA senior vice president from 2005-06 and NRCA president from 2006-07. During his time at the helm of NRCA, his entrepreneurial spirit guided him in the promotion and advancement of green and vegetative roof systems in the U.S. He dedicated his time to visiting contractor groups across the country to educate them about vegetative roof systems. Gaulin also served as president of the Associated Roofing Contractors of Maryland in the early 1990s.
Gaulin has been in the roofing industry for more than four decades. Starting his career in 1978 at Barra Inc., a German manufacturer of single-ply roofing materials, he soon became a minority partner with SCF Decks in Nazareth, Pa. In 1987, he decided to start his own business, MAGCO. Under his leadership, MAGCO grew to about 60 employees with additional branches in Fredericksburg, Va., and Petersburg, Va.
In 1993, Gaulin founded Metal Fab Manufacturing, a producer of architectural metal roofing and accessories, and in 2000 was a key leader in the consolidation and formation of Tecta America Corp., one of the nation’s largest commercial roofing contractors. He served as COO of Tecta America from 2007-10 and interim CEO from 2013-14. He currently serves on the board of directors for Tecta America.
Gaulin has been involved with many NRCA committees, including chairing the Architectural Sheet Metal Committee, Internet/Electronic Communications Committee and NRCA Retirement Committee.
"During his more than three decades in the industry, he has been a passionate advocate for NRCA and the industry, including testifying in Congress on behalf of small businesses and small-business concerns," said Helene Hardy Pierce, vice president of technical services, codes and industry relations at GAF, when presenting the award. "His focus on green roofing, solar initiatives and sustainable construction has led to best practices in the roofing industry. He is an honest worker, trustworthy colleague, tireless volunteer and is consistently innovative."
"I am truly flattered and honored to be recognized by my peers and the industry with this award, and I am proud to be a part of this great industry," Gaulin said when accepting the award.
First presented in 1948, the J.A. Piper Award is named for former NRCA President Joseph A. Piper, whose extraordinary efforts kept the association alive during the Great Depression.
