GreenCircle Certification (2015, 2016)
GreenCircle provides third-party certification of sustainability claims through a rigorous scientific evaluation based on internationally recognized standards and guidelines. All three of Malarkey’s asphalt roofing facilities have achieved the Waste Diversion from Landfill certification, demonstrating responsible management of end-of-life materials.
In the GreenCircle certification process, diversion, and reduction can be achieved through a combination of approved methods. Malarkey utilized the methods of source reduction, recycling, energy recovery, and reuse of materials to achieve waste diversion from landfill thresholds.
The evaluated Malarkey facilities achieved diversion rates of 89 percent or greater as follows:
The Portland location has a fiberglass mat facility on site, which was not included in this analysis in order to achieve a more direct comparison to other facilities in the industry. Malarkey plans to pursue separate certification for the mat facility at a later date.
100 Best Green Workplaces in Oregon (2016) Malarkey was ranked as number 90 among the 100 Best Green Workplaces in Oregon. More than 15,000 employees and volunteers from the for-profit and nonprofit sectors took part in the survey. Participants come from a variety of sectors, including tech, professional services, manufacturing, and auto.
Oklahoma City Storm Water Award (2016) For outstanding achievement in storm water management, Malarkey’s Oklahoma City manufacturing facility received an award in 2016. The facility acquired this distinction by accurately measuring and improving management practices for storm water pass way protection. Beginning with 89 percent waste diversion from the landfill (certified through GreenCircle), the facility already realized a significant reduction in the polluting of the storm water system. From there, the team installed grating and filters over storm water inlets to reduce the chances of debris entrance. A movable containment cart was also fabricated to place under trucks while offloading material to act as spill containment, and an awning was built to cover all roll-off trash containers. Lastly, members from the Malarkey team participated in a Litter Blitz trash pick-up organized by Oklahoma City Beautiful.
Governor’s Energy Award for Outstanding Achievements in Energy Conservation (1985) Malarkey Roofing Products® earned this award for reducing its natural gas consumption by over 80 percent. This feat was accomplished with the installation of a methane recovery pipeline to the company’s manufacturing facility from a nearby wastewater treatment plant.
The City of Portland’s Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant, managed by the Bureau of Environmental Services, is Oregon’s largest wastewater treatment facility, cleaning about 30 billion gallons of water a year. The process generates about 1.5-million cubic feet of methane gas every day.
Malarkey began construction on the pipeline in 1983 to transport methane gas to the manufacturing facility one mile down the road. The initial investment for Malarkey was sizable but aligned with the core sustainable values of both facilities. Once the pipeline was completed in 1984, methane from the plant was used for the facility’s product manufacturing – from curing fiberglass mat to providing the process heat source for shingles and other asphalt roofing products. Today, Malarkey continues to operate this pipeline and has a historical average of 67% of the roofing manufacturing facility powered by gas from the wastewater plant.
