Learn About Legal Issues and Pitfalls Building Enclosure Professionals Face

IIBEC Auxiliary Seminar
March 3, 2020 at 6:00 p.m.

By Lauren White, RCS Reporter.

An auxiliary seminar at IIBEC will be presented by Cotney Construction Law.

Join fellow roofing professionals at the 2020 IIBEC International Convention and Trade Show on March 26-31, 2020.  The International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) has arranged over 25 hours of educational sessions, which will take place at the Marriott Marquis Houston and George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.  Learn about the latest building envelope design, repair, and maintenance techniques and technologies.

On March 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Cotney Construction Law will present: Legal Issues and Potential Pitfalls that Confront Building Enclosure Consultants, Architects, Engineers, and Contractors.

The construction industry is constantly facing change.  While change is good, it can also bring about legal issues.  During this seven-hour presentation, attendees will learn about the potential pitfalls that can impact building enclosure consultants, architects, engineers, and contractors.  They will address warranties, wage and hour compliance, best practices for hiring and firing, contract formation, and critical contract provisions.

Multiple associations in the construction industry use Cotney Construction Law as their general counsel.  These associations include: the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Association (FRSA), the Florida Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Association (FRACCA), the Tennessee Association of Roofing Contractors (TARC), Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3), Western States Roofing Contractors Association (WSRCA), and several others.

The three presenters from Cotney Construction Law are Trent Cotney, Ric Asfar, and Rick Blystone.

As a board-certified construction lawyer in Florida, and the owner of Cotney Construction Law, Trent Cotney focuses his practice on construction litigation, arbitration, OSHA defense, lien law, bond law, bid protests, and construction document review and drafting.  He is also licensed in Illinois, Kansas, Tennessee, and Texas and has represented general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, manufacturers, architects, engineers, developers, and others in the construction industry.

An AV-rated civil litigator and appellate advocate, Ric Asfar has more than a dozen years of experience representing individuals, government entities, and businesses in California and Florida.

Rick Blystone is a Florida Bar board-certified specialist in labor and employment law.  He assists his clients in reviewing and preparing employee policies, handbooks, and contracts, and also develops employee/management training.  Rick also helps clients with employment law questions regarding hiring, discipline, internal investigations, terminations, reasonable accommodations, FMLA compliance, non-solicitation, confidentiality, and non-compete matters.

Building envelope industry professionals travel from all over the United States and abroad to attend this convention.  There’s a lot to learn at IIBEC. While this is only one of numerous educational sessions, this presentation from Cotney Construction Law is one you won’t want to miss!
