Charles Emmons recently was the recipient of a new roof thanks to the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. The 85-year-old Korean War veteran lives in Hampton. Georgia with his wife of 55 years, Carolyn.
Carolyn shared in an interview with the Henry County Times, “I began to find pieces of roofing in the yard about 18 months ago. I had called some roofing companies to find out how much it would be, and their prices were astronomical and out of sight.”
After seeing an ad on a local TV station for the Owens Corning program, she called the station to ask about it. They referred her to an organization called Purple Heart Homes, Inc. that helps the elderly and disabled with home repairs.
Carolyn didn’t hear anything for a long time, until one day they called to ask if she was still in need. A representative from Total Roofing Solutions, an Owens Corning contractor who would donate the labor, visited the home and examined the roof using a drone.
Soon after that visit, the crews from Total Roofing Solutions showed up with materials donated by the Owens Corning program and began working on the new roof.
“You could tell, watching the crew, that they knew what they were doing,” she told the Times. “They did their job, and it is absolutely beautiful. It’s a great feeling to go to bed at night knowing everything’s going to be okay, and it’s all because of these people.”
Owens Corning has donated more than 200 roofs to military veterans across the United States since launching the program in 2016.
