Kim Eckerman & Melissa Dunson - How one Shingle is Changing the Industry
August 23, 2022 at 1:11 p.m.

Editor's note: The following is the transcript of a live interview with Kim Eckerman and Melissa Dunson of Tamko. You can read the interview below or listen to the podcast.

Speaker 1:
Welcome to Roofing Road Trips with Heidi. Explore the roofing industry through the eyes of a long-term professional within the trade. Listen for insights, interviews, and exciting news in the roofing industry today.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Welcome to another Roofing Road Trips from Roofers Coffee Shop. This is Heidi Ellsworth, and I'm telling you this morning ... I know I say this all the time. So if you're listening to the podcast regularly, you're always like, "Yeah, yeah, Heidi, you love everybody," but that's really the truth today. It's the truth all the time, because I really do love this industry. But what I find most fascinating is when you have these amazingly strong women in roofing who have brought products with their teams, not just by themselves, but who have brought products to the industry that really are revolutionary. And so today we get to talk about that. I'm honored to introduce Kim Eckerman and Melissa Dunson from TAMKO. Good morning ladies.

Kim Eckerman:
Good morning, Heidi.

Melissa Dunson:
Good morning.

Heidi Ellsworth:
I just love our talks. I love what you have all been doing. I've watched it over the last two years. It's been incredible. The amount that the marketing communications group at TAMKO has got out and it's amazing all of the engineers, the six sigma, all of the factory workers, the manufacturing, you guys just are rocking it. So before we start talking about all that, first I'd like to have you introduce yourselves. So Kim, can I start with you?

Kim Eckerman:
Yeah, absolutely. So thank you so much for having us today and saying all those lovely things about TAMKO. We are working really hard, and there's never been a more exciting time in my career with TAMKO, and I think probably for a lot of people. We are really excited about the future and where we're headed on a very strategic path to get there. We've always been focused on continuous improvement, and so we're just forging ahead with this new innovation process as well. But you want to know about me.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Yes.

Kim Eckerman:
So I have worked for TAMKO for about a decade. I am the director of marketing and communications. My background is in journalism, so I was actually a journalist before I came to TAMKO, and then worked into corporate communications, and then that grew into the strategy behind product marketing as well. So leading both of those teams for the company now. We have done a lot in the past two years to really push our marketing efforts and grow those and reach out to people in new digital ways. It's been very exciting. So yeah, that's a little bit about my background and what I'm helping to lead here at TAMKO.

Heidi Ellsworth:
I love it. We've really been able to document all this on Roofer's Coffee Shop too over the last couple years. So we'll talk more about that. Melissa, can you introduce yourself?

Melissa Dunson:
Yeah, I am Melissa Dunson, I'm the manager of marketing communications at TAMKO, and I actually have a similar path to Kim. I started out in journalism. She was a broadcast journalist. I was a print journalist. It was a match made in heaven. And I came to TAMKO, I've been at TAMKO for about a dozen years, worked in communications and then moved over into marketing. And I just love what I do. I think anybody who's ever talked to me can tell, I get really passionate, really excited, and I really love what I do and I really, really love TAMKO. It has been a wild ride for the last couple years, but I wouldn't take back any of it because it has been transformative for our business, and it's really, I think helped push not only TAMKO, but I think the industry forward, so it's exciting.

Kim Eckerman:
Yeah, absolutely.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Yeah. And really transformative and how you've both brought it to market too, has been really taking it to that next step, really embracing the digital. But of course you did all this during COVID, so there was a lot of challenges as you went. But I really want to talk about ... we've been talking around it, but I want to talk about the launch of Titan XT, such an amazing product. So Kim, let's start with you. Give us the history of Titan XT, how it came to be and launched into the industry.

Kim Eckerman:
I love talking about this, it's so fun. So I think it's certainly worth mentioning what you just said, this was during the COVID pandemic, but that wasn't the time to stop and pause on product innovation. We had found a need in the industry. We had gone directly to contractors to figure out what they were looking for, and turned that into really kind of an ultimate re-roof shingle. It's an amazing product. And so all of that happened at the same time we were deciding what we needed to do with our contractor program, to build better focus and provide more of what our customers were asking for. This all relates back to truly a thematic goal revolving around customer experience, and how can we improve that? With our focus on continuous improvement, some of those efforts have been inwards and our manufacturing processes and of course our quality of our products in ongoing fashion.

Kim Eckerman:
But now we're to a point where we wanted to focus those more on our customer experience. And so everything that you're seeing from us is the evolution of that. So the launch of Titan XT, the launch of the Edge Contractor Program along with that, and it's been a really fun journey. You can see the adoption within the industry of getting excited about these products, welcoming them with open arms, especially once they get their hands on Titan and they realize how well the product performs. And then the dramatic growth we've had in just a little over a year since we launched our Edge Contractor Program. So you can see the tremendous trends in membership growth there and usage of that digital platform that's state-of-the-art, and just the engagement we're getting with contractors. So, it's very exciting.

Heidi Ellsworth:
It's so cool. And really, I've been watching too. To see the growth is phenomenal. But Melissa, I know you've been working with a lot of contractors. We were actually at Florida last week where you had hands on with the Titan from the contractors. What is some of the feedback from them?

Melissa Dunson:
Yeah, it gets me so jazzed. It's really exciting. So you launch this product, you do focus groups in the beginning and you realize, "I think we have something really special." And then you bring it to market and then you just start getting to see it more and more and more. And so I'm just going to remind people of really what makes it different. So we have the expanded nailing zone, but the thing that really makes it so different in the industry is really the way we choose to reinforce that expanded nailing zone. And it's a proprietary piece of technology, it's a reinforcement that we make in-house. It's called the Anchor Lock Layer. It's embedded in the common bond, and it is some tough stuff. And both how we make it and how we put it in the shingle just really gives it those performance qualities.

Melissa Dunson:
And then we also redid our sealants, and it's very aggressive. Contractors are loving it, really impressed by it. And then those two things together gave us the confidence to give it this new 160 mile per hour high wind warranty. And people can learn all about that, but those are really the features that we hear the most about from contractors. There's also the top coating has been redone. When contractors feel it in their hands, they're like, "This is a really good shingle." And so it's been interesting because as soon as we started putting in contractors' hands, some of the responses we were getting was like, "This is the best shingle that I've ever grabbed a hold of." That was a direct quote from one, "This is exactly what we want. I'm impressed." So early on we thought, "I think this is something that's going to be really important."

Melissa Dunson:
And so COVID had its unique challenges of how are we going to get, first of all, the word out about it and how are we going to get this shingle into contractor's hands? Because once they experience it, then they really like this shingle. They're like, "It's really tough, but it cuts really well." They just are loving this. It lays so well, it has beautiful colors. And then they see it perform in high winds, and they're just like, "This is the best thing. Why would I ever install anything else?" A guy on the coast, a direct quote from him, a contractor said, "It's better than everything else I'm putting on everything I can."

Heidi Ellsworth:
Wow.

Melissa Dunson:
...better than everything else, I'm putting on everything I can.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Wow.

Melissa Dunson:
I mean, I talk about a strong statement from a contractor, been in the business a long time. A large contractor saying if you're in a high wind area, why would you ever put anything else on, because it just performs so well. So, those are direct quotes from contractors. So we want to find ways to get the shingle into contractors' hands because lots of contractors have heard about it, but because it was launched during COVID, it's been a little bit slower actually getting into contractors' hands. So what we did at FRSA and what we did at our event that we had in Denver last month are all part of that. And I refer to them as transformative conversations, where someone comes to you in a booth or at an event and they think one thing about a product and about a company. And they leave after seeing the demo, thinking something completely different. And that's what we're seeing over and over and over again. Contractors are amazed, impressed and they say, "I want that, give me the information about that. I am very interested in this product."

Heidi Ellsworth:
That is powerful.

Melissa Dunson:
Yeah, it is.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Yeah. That's basically changing the mind of contractors, which we all know is a little cynical.

Melissa Dunson:
Absolutely.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Because they've seen so many different things and they're cynical. So to have that response, Kim, I mean, what are you hearing from the contractors that way?

Kim Eckerman:
I think that clearly a contractor may think they know TAMKO. They may think they know our products, our flagship shingle, our heritage architectural shingle that we've made for years. It's a fantastic product. And that may be what they know of us and Titan is our performance product. It has all of these technological advancements that Melissa was talking through. And it has other features that they're not aware of that they haven't seen yet. So they think they know TAMKO, but they don't know this TAMKO. So I love that term transformative conversations, because even contractors who use a lot of heritage, it's encouraging them to try Titan because you have use cases where you're going to need this product and they have seen that. And they're very happy with the results too.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Let's talk a little bit about the timing of this too, with everything that's happening with extreme weather. I mean, even though we know that we've had a quieter hurricane season, thank goodness, but the hail season, the winds, the heat waves, all those kind of things are really just happening. And so to come out at this time with this extreme performance shingle is really going to meet the need. Melissa, maybe talk just a little bit about that.

Melissa Dunson:
Yeah. I do think the industry has been moving in that direction where not only homeowners, property owners, but also contractors in response to that are looking for building products. I'll use the term, it's being used in the industry, but resilient. Products that are more resilient, products that are designed to perform in more extreme weather conditions. And so we've seen the entire industry move toward that. And the shingle really is sort of a response to that. We always say it's extreme technology designed to help weather extreme conditions. And that's how we describe Titan XT. And you mentioned hail, right? We've been talking about high winds, but we actually have a product we launch at the same time as Titan, that the same anchor lock layer that we have, is that reinforcement of the nail line in Titan XT it covers the entire backside of the shingle, in a shingle we call storm fighter IR, and it's a class four. And it's impact rated. And it's for folks who are in the part of the country where they're really concerned about that.

Heidi Ellsworth:
And I'm going to back up just a little bit because how my mind goes, thinking through these things. But I wanted, Kim, when we're talking about, so you had Titan XT come out, you had this storm fighter. And you had a lot out there. From a marketing standpoint, just really getting in front of the contractors, you and Melissa and your team, what were some of your biggest objectives on getting this out and doing it a little bit different marketing this product?

Kim Eckerman:
Well, the drive has become expert communicators with our contractors. So you have all these multiple channels and ways to reach them. And so it's figuring out how can we get our information to you? And it's the reason why we have a great relationship with Rupert's coffee shop, Heidi. You help us to make those fantastic connections with contractors. They know you're highly knowledgeable in this industry. And so we love having these conversations with you, because you can really help us to communicate that information well, but it was really about the strategy behind, "Hey, we have this great product. None of this is marketing gimmick. We have tested, we know the truth, we're excited to share it." And so it's figuring out what are the exciting ways that we can do that. Things that you may not have seen from us before so that we can get this information out because it's more about getting someone's attention at that point in the conversation and helping them to then try it for yourself because you will see the difference.

Kim Eckerman:
So really, really focused on the ways that we can do that. And it's a great example of the ongoing campaign efforts that we've had. It's the send me titan.com. We have a landing page where we are encouraging contractors, go to that page, request a sample of Titan XT. We will send it to you and you can try it for yourself. Or if we are having all of these fantastic events, Melissa was just talking about FRSA, where we had this fantastic demo station where people could come and get their hands on it there as well. And if you're not able to make it to one of those events, again, you have the ability to request that and we'll send it directly to you. But another fantastic example is our Denver warehouse event that we had. It's only been about a month ago and that was along with a customer appreciation focus. It was another great opportunity for us to show contractors and area distributors our new Titan XT product along with storm fighter as well, because they are an area of the country that has an appreciation for a class four impact rated shingle. So we had Titan XT there. We invited in area contractors and distributors. We also invited some of our affinity program, people like Rupert's coffee shop.

Heidi Ellsworth:
We were there.

Melissa Dunson:
It was great.

Kim Eckerman:
It was really fun. And so while we're thanking our customers for their loyalty, because we're celebrating 50 years in that Denver market. TAMKO as a whole is nearly 80 years old, but Denver market we'd had a presence for the past 50 years. And so we were celebrating that, but then also giving people the opportunity, as I said, because it's so important for them to get their hands on this and see it for themselves. We can say it, our contractors are saying it, but we want you to experience it. We want you to see the difference.

Heidi Ellsworth:
So I love this. I love the combination of virtual and in person. And that was one of the things that we all talked about a lot during COVID and go back to the old way. No, it's not. It's going to go back to a new way.

Melissa Dunson:
A combination.

Heidi Ellsworth:
A combination. Yeah.

Melissa Dunson:
Yeah.

Heidi Ellsworth:
So Melissa, you've got some Titan experience or experience Titan XT, sorry, that's coming out. And I know it starts with the Texas road show, so let's tell people how they can come get their hands on this.

Melissa Dunson:
Yeah. Absolutely. Maybe you weren't in Florida. Yeah. And that's okay. And maybe you're not in the Denver market and that's okay. We are going to continue to do more of these events. The next ones that are up is a Texas road show. It's happening in August. You can go and get some additional information. If you are a Texas contractor, we will be contacting you about it so that you can RSVP...

Melissa Dunson:
We'll be contacting you about it so that you can RSVP. There's three different locations, all at the end of August. You're going to be able to get your hands on Titan XT, and have a chance to win some Titan XT to take home with you. So there's the whole thing for that. But then we're also, it's not just Texas, we're going back out to the west and we're going to have some additional events at our warehouses in the rest of the west, in different states, Arizona, Utah. We're going to look on the east coast. We're going to have events all around. And then if there's a industry trade show in your area, come to it and find the TAMKO booth, because if we're there, we're going to be doing these demos. We're going to be giving contractors the chance to not only hold it in their hand, but then to actually rip it off a deck to actually test the strength of the thing that we're talking about.

Melissa Dunson:
We always talk about seeing as believing, right?

Heidi Ellsworth:
Right.

Melissa Dunson:
And that's part of the deal, is we spent part of 2020 in raising awareness of a product. You can't buy a product, want a product if you don't know it exists. So we had to make people aware that it existed, create that interest and then help convert people in that moment. That's that decision point. You have awareness, interest, and then you have that decision point where people actually understand the superior performance of it. And that's that magical moment where we're there. Most people are now aware, they have peaked their interest, and now reaching that point where people are being able to experience it, see it. So there's more events coming. Those are just the ones that we know about so far, but it's going to continue all the way into next year. So regardless of where you live, you'll probably have a chance to-

Heidi Ellsworth:
Transformational, to have a chance to transform into.

Melissa Dunson:
Absolutely.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Yeah. Experiencing Time Next Tea. What are some of the shows you have [inaudible 00:19:48]-

Kim Eckerman:
Our sales team is out there. [inaudible 00:19:53] doing all of this as well. So it may not be an official hosted event like this. They're willing to meet with contractors, distributors. They're doing that daily. It's what they do. If you're interested, you want to learn more, you're not sure where to find us, you can always reach out and we'll make sure that we get you in touch with the right person.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Yeah. Talk to your distributor, talk to your sales reps. It's out there everywhere.

Melissa Dunson:
If you want a demo of Titan XT, we will get you one.

Kim Eckerman:
You will get it.

Heidi Ellsworth:
What are some of the shows that you have in your sites for this fall?

Melissa Dunson:
We have Western States. We have the RCAT, MRCA show. We've got Best of Success. I'm forgetting some of them. Those are the ones that are at the top of my mind right now. So yeah, all of the big ones. Yeah, we will have a presence. We'll be there.

Heidi Ellsworth:
That is great. That's great.

Melissa Dunson:
It's good to be back Heidi. It's good to be back in person.

Heidi Ellsworth:
So good. It just, ugh, yeah, I'm loving it. And I love being in person. We just did our videos last week, Melissa together in person. It was awesome.

Melissa Dunson:
It was the first time I've seen you in person in two and a half years. That's crazy.

Heidi Ellsworth:
I know.

Melissa Dunson:
I know.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Little bit beyond just Zoom. Okay, we kind of touched on this earlier, but I want to make sure we really give this some good time, but let's talk about your loyalty program. And so Kim, maybe you kind of talked about it a little bit, but how do contractors, what is it, why should they be involved? How do they get involved? Kind of give us the overview.

Kim Eckerman:
The TAMKO Edge Contractor program, we are really standing up to that name and helping to give you the edge. There's something for everyone in this program for across the contractor base. We have for all members that want to be in the program, it's free. It takes less than 90 seconds to sign up, register for an account. And then you automatically qualify for one of our rewards programs. And those rewards programs mean buy products and get cash back. Simple as that.

Kim Eckerman:
And then on top of that, just the entry level membership, you can become a certified contractor with TAMKO. And we have for two different levels of certified contractor, we have TAMKO Pros and TAMKO MasterCraft Pros, the top tier within that program. And those contractors that are certified with us qualify for even better rewards, so even better cash back that they can earn on the products, the TAMKO products that they purchase.

Kim Eckerman:
And in addition to all of that, we have some fantastic promotions that are running from now until the end of the year, specifically to help you to experience our Proline products. So on top of the additional rewards programs that we offer, these promotions stack on top of that. So any Titan XT or Storm Fighter purchases that contractors make from now through the end of the year, they can qualify for even extra cash back rewards. So truly never a better time to try products.

Kim Eckerman:
And whether you've tried them before or you're ready to try them now, the incentives are there. We're providing them for you. And we make it super easy to get that cash back. We have an edge membership and all the information is there within the portal about how to register for rewards and get your cash back. We try to make it as simple as possible. With this brand new state of the art portal, it truly is. It's better than it's ever been. So we have, again, kind of something for everyone.

Heidi Ellsworth:
One of the... Oh, go ahead, Melissa.

Melissa Dunson:
I was just going to say every level, both non-certified and certified contractors also have access to amazing affinity programs and offers and discounts from people like Roofer's Coffee Shop, from some of the other biggest names in the industry. You've got like HailTrace and JobNimbus and EagleView and RoofSnap. And we have some marketing companies in there. We have, and I'm probably forgetting other people who are fantastic, but all of the biggest names in the industry for roofing tools that contractors want and use, we have programs with those folks and they're in our portal. And if you're a member of the edge, you can get awesome discounts, GreenSky, homeowner financing, almost forgot them. Really important stuff that people can either get special training with those folks to really understand the value of it and how to sell it and incorporate in their business like JobNimbus. They do special trainings that they want people to be successful. And then you can also get awesome discounts with that program as well.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Well, and I love how you all do this. So like we mentioned earlier, Roofer's Coffee Shop is also an affinity partner. And so as an affinity partner, we offer the TAMKO, if you're in the edge, you're going to get discounts on classified ads. You're going to get discounts on joining the art club. So a lot of stuff. But what I really loved that you all did and that I've not seen done that well a lot is that you set up your affinity partners to actually present to your sales team and then present to your contractors. Because how often are sales teams left out of this kind of information? You don't understand the loyalty program.

Melissa Dunson:
The value of it, yeah.

Heidi Ellsworth:
You don't understand the value. And so I love that. I think it's just brilliant. Brilliant communication and your sales team was just awesome to talk to. They have as much passion as both of you.

Melissa Dunson:
Absolutely.

Kim Eckerman:
They are awesome. And they want to understand what we're offering, of course, because they're the ones helping contractors make that connection. It's about offering what the contractors want when they want it and how they need it. They're busy. They're in, they're out installing roofs or taking care of homeowners, helping people improve their homes. And so what are the tools that we can bring together to make their lives better and help them build their businesses on? So we're putting all those together and presenting it to them and helping them know and understand what those offerings are. So it's absolutely a key to, because helping them grow their businesses, because in turn that helps everyone.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Right.

Melissa Dunson:
Hey, while we're talking about our contractor program, two more things we haven't mentioned is certified contractors and we're talking about Titan XT, certified contractors can offer enhanced warranties based on being certified and they can have those enhanced warranties registered right there in that digital portal in the edge. And.

Melissa Dunson:
Here in that digital portal in the Edge. And some of the products you can offer it on include Titan XT, StormFighter IR that we're talking about here, but we also have an enhanced warranty now on Heritage as well. So it's really, it's a lot of buzz. Contractors are loving it, registering those homeowners. It's a really great selling point to homeowners.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Mm-hmm.

Melissa Dunson:
And then the other thing is, Kim referenced it, but we do. I mean, it just started July 1st. We have an amazing promotion that's going on, a rewards, cashback rewards promotion on Titan XT and StormFighter IR, which are our Proline products. And you can get all the details on that at tamko.com/experienceproline.

Melissa Dunson:
And there are three different offers as part of that, so you need to go read them all. I promise you fit into one of those categories. If you're a contractor, you've either tried Titan and StormFighter or you haven't. And there are different programs, different rewards promos with various different cashback offers. So especially if you haven't tried Titan yet, go there, get the details on it and try it and get a great rewards promo in return.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Yeah.

Kim Eckerman:
And we make it very easy for you on those programs [inaudible 00:28:11]. We will figure out what works for you and what you need and make sure you're getting the most cashback that we have to offer. So it's worth it. Now is the time if you-

Melissa Dunson:
Now is the time to try Titan.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Yeah. Now is the time. Well, I just want to point out too. So as the contractors, as you go in, you register for TAMKO Edge. As soon as you register, you don't have to do anything and you're going to automatically have a credit in your that you-

Melissa Dunson:
Oh, yeah.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Right? No one does that.

Melissa Dunson:
Heidi's over here trying to help us sell our contractor program. Yeah, you're right. We have a special store, it's just for contractors. It has TAMKO gear in it. It's very cool, special logoed items that have various levels of the contractor program that people can't get anywhere else.

Kim Eckerman:
Customized literature.

Melissa Dunson:
Customized literature, job signs, business cards, super customized to your business. And we give every person who signs up money to use, credits to use inside that store on those items, so it's a great selling point of our program.

Heidi Ellsworth:
All you have to do is sign up. You don't even have to buy anything, just sign up. But then once you start buying things, all these programs, all the warranties, everything's out there. I just love this from a marketing... My many years of marketing, I was like, "Kudos to you. This is, it just is amazing, amazing program."

Heidi Ellsworth:
Okay. So we said this a couple times as we've gone through, but let's just finalize how to do this. So first of all, how do they get in? Melissa, we'll start with you. How do they get a hold of the Titan XT shingle [inaudible 00:29:53]?

Melissa Dunson:
Oh, love it so much. So we have made it so easy. Sendmetitan.com. Super easy. If you go there, you can watch some cool performance videos and then there's a form. You can fill it out and we will mail you a Titan XT shingle for you to hold in your hand, to experience it, and then let us know what you think about it and reach out to a rep if you want.

Heidi Ellsworth:
I love it. That's so fun. I mean, everybody should do that. There's just no thoughts.

Melissa Dunson:
It's pretty cool.

Heidi Ellsworth:
It's easy. And you can actually get your hands on it. Okay. Kim, how do they sign up for the TAMKO Edge?

Kim Eckerman:
So tamko.com again. And if you can't remember these addresses, just go to tamko.com. You're going to find what you're looking for. But tamko.com/edge is going to get you where you need to go to get started if you don't have an Edge membership with us yet.

Kim Eckerman:
And it really lays out all the wonderful information about it. Great little video that shows you what the offerings are and a fantastic little button where you can click to get started.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Easy.

Kim Eckerman:
Very simple. Yeah.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Very easy. Okay. Last one, Melissa, the special incentives go through the end of August, right?

Melissa Dunson:
No, these ones go through the end of the year, right? So it started July 1st.

Heidi Ellsworth:
End of the year, yeah.

Melissa Dunson:
And this is a sweet deal, you guys. So these new promotions started July 1st and they're going to run for purchases all the way through December 31st. So don't wait.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Yeah.

Melissa Dunson:
Get started. Sign up. If you're already in the Edge, you're already eligible for these. If you're not in the Edge yet, go today and sign up so that you immediately become eligible for these. They are some of the best rewards offering I've ever seen TAMKO do. Our sales team's excited about it. Contractors are excited about it. And again, if you want some additional information about them, it's tamko.com/experienceproline.

Heidi Ellsworth:
Excellent. And I'm going to say one last thing, that all of this that we just talked about is on Roofers Coffee Shop on the TAMKO directory. So you can get all this information there too if you're like, "Oh, I'm driving. I can't write any of this down."

Heidi Ellsworth:
Just go to Roofers Coffee Shop, go to the directory and you'll find Kim and Melissa and all of this great stuff to be able to do. Ladies, thank you so much for sharing all this, and congratulations.

Melissa Dunson:
Thank you, Heidi.

Kim Eckerman:
