Recently, members of the Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3) had the honor of touring the Boxabl factory in Las Vegas, Nevada before it was operational. Having just moved into their four-acre manufacturing facility, RT3 received the first-ever tour of the factory, given by the owners themselves!
Paolo and Galiano Tiramani, a dynamic father-son duo who are also business partners, shared with us their “why,” their current state of production and their vision for the future – let me tell you, Boxabl is revolutionizing the homebuying process. Anyone can go online and order a home, which can then be delivered via train, shipping Freightliner, semi or even loaded onto a trailer and delivered anywhere in the world. And get this, once a Casita is delivered to your property, it can be unfolded and ready to hook up to all utilities in just one hour!
The Tiramani’s mission with Boxabl is to significantly lower the cost of homeownership while providing a home that is designed at the highest standards of quality, strength and sustainability. And they’ve done just that with their original model, the Boxable Casita. Meaning “small home” in Spanish, the Casita is approximately 400 square feet and costs $49,500 plus shipping and can be produced in just 90 minutes.
Paolo and Galiano wanted a small space but didn’t want to compromise on comfort and refused to install anything small, so all appliances are standard size – refrigerator, counter tops, sinks and shower. The washer and dryer are an all-in-one unit, taking up minimal space but allowing homeowners to still do a regular size load of laundry. There’s even a front AND back door! With nine and a half foot ceilings, there’s no reason to feel cramped and the eight-foot-tall windows bring in natural light, making the home feel more spacious. 16 members of RT3, in addition to our tour guide Paolo comfortably fit inside the home; plenty of room to host a party!
Boxabl’s insulation technology and included LED lighting are energy efficient, saving homeowners money every day. The way the insulation and walls have been designed make them everything proof – bug resistant, water resistant, mold resistant, wind resistant and fire resistant.
While currently in the “controlled explosion” phase of moving in, they already have a contract with the U.S. government for 150 units to be sent to the East Coast for an area that was hit by a natural disaster. During our tour we walked past piles of insulation, refrigerators, windows, sinks and other elements that will soon be assembled and shipped across the country to those in need.
As visionaries and problem solvers, Galiano and Paolo have big plans for their small homes. They eventually want to offer a variety of models for people to choose from to create their own custom home that can connect together and be one cohesive unit – think Lego meets IKEA. Boxabl homes can be stacked up to five high, providing plenty of options to customize.
Some in the roofing industry have queried, “How does this impact us?” Currently designed with flat roofs, it’s up to the homeowner to have a different roof installed. Boxabl will provide a certified roofing contractor with roof plans to be added to the home. And in the future, Boxabl wants to offer different roof styles as part of the dwelling selection process, making these homes entirely customizable.
