It is with profound sadness that the Western States Roofing Contractors Association (WSRCA) shares the news of the passing of a true legend in the roofing industry and our beloved friend, Johnny Zamrzla, affectionately known to many as “Johnny Z,” at the age of 86.
While Johnny's professional accomplishments are nearly too numerous to list and speak volumes about his leadership and dedication, it is the man behind those achievements who will be remembered most fondly. Johnny’s warmth, integrity and unwavering support for his peers left a lasting impression on everyone privileged to know him.
Johnny was instrumental in shaping the WSRCA, helping to form the foundation upon which we continue to build today. In 1999, he was rightfully honored with induction into the WSRCA Hall of Fame, a testament to his lifelong commitment to elevating our industry. Nationally, Johnny's leadership extended to the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), where he served as past president and was the distinguished recipient of the NRCA’s highest honor, the J.A. Piper Award, in 1984.
We were incredibly fortunate to have Johnny in attendance at the Western Roofing Expo this past September. He was in wonderful spirits, sharing heartfelt stories about the founding of Western States. As always, he was a joy to be around — his laughter, insight and presence lit up the room.
Johnny Z’s influence will continue to be felt across the roofing community, not only through the legacy of his work but in the values and spirit he instilled in all of us. He will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing this extraordinary man.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of Johnny Zamrzla’s passing. Johnny was a true icon of Western States and the roofing industry as a whole. His leadership, vision and unwavering commitment helped shape the foundation of our association and inspired generations of roofing professionals.
We feel incredibly fortunate that Johnny was able to join us at our 50th Western Roofing Expo this past September. His presence, stories and spirit made the milestone all the more meaningful.
He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.”
