Iconic Waterloo Station Gets Plastic Roof

RCS Waterloo Station
July 30, 2023 at 3:00 p.m.

By Cayden Wemple.

Construction has begun on the iconic station’s roof that has been standing for a century.

The newest construction project for London’s Waterloo Station is under way to replace the century-old glass roof that was installed after World War I. The project will require 10,000 new glazed plastic panels that will cover 12,000 square Meters, or roughly 1,300 American football fields.

The plastic material is about 50% lighter than the glass that was previously on the building. This will significantly relieve stress on the structure and Cem Davis, Waterloo station manager, told BBC that passengers "will soon benefit from a lighter and brighter station, making journeys more welcoming and pleasant.”

As part of an extensive station improvement program aimed at enhancing the overall experience for passengers, notable changes are planned for the popular Cab Road to streamline taxi operations, including the implementation of a one-way system.

Being recognized as the busiest station in Britain, exciting developments lie ahead, with the introduction of new retail brands and an enticing array of food outlets, adding a touch of novelty and variety for visitors.

Moreover, a strong emphasis on sustainability will be evident as the station embraces eco-conscious practices by installing more environmentally friendly wooden seating, creating a welcoming and environmentally responsible environment. Complementing these enhancements, Network Rail has already embarked on refurbishing the restrooms, proactively addressing inclusivity by incorporating a gender-neutral facility earlier this year, ensuring that all individuals feel valued and catered to.

Although the presence of scaffolding in the area will be a bit of an eyesore, this will prove to be a beneficial project for passengers. These collective efforts exemplify the station's commitment to continually raise the bar in delivering a seamless, convenient and exceptional passenger experience for all who pass through its bustling gates.
