Life in the desert is intense. The desert is the site of extreme temperatures; desert temperatures drop to 25 degrees at night and can reach 100 degrees in the day. Not to mention the cold winters the desert sees after dry, arid summers. Ordinary building materials can easily fail under these kinds of temperature fluctuations.
This project needed something better where the roof was concerned. With a footprint of 16,600 square feet the owner was looking for two things - the best flat roofing materials, and the best roofing contractor around. He found what he was looking for in IB Roof Systems 80-mil PVC single-ply membrane and Bill Thomas from Roof Tile Specialty.
The project was completed thanks to a combination of an EPS tapered foam insulation under a layer of ¼” primed DensDeck. Both materials were fully adhered to the roof deck, which provided a good foundation to install a 34-kilowatt solar panel system. After this was completed, the IB Roof Systems 80-mil white PVC single-ply membrane was fully adhered with hot-air welded seams.
The roofing project did come with some hurdles, Bill Thomas stated, “Due to the window design on the clerestory the taper insulation left us zero tolerance between the taper system and the window frames.” He continued, “This didn’t allow for traditional flashing details. IB Technical Support and I were able to create a clad flashing detail that worked perfectly.”
The whole project took 21 days to complete. With the challenges that came with the roof, it took a great team of Roof Tile Specialty and IB Roof Systems to complete it to everybody’s satisfaction.
