Creating a strong company culture isn’t just a trendy buzzword — it’s a proven way to boost productivity, retain employees and drive profitability. In this episode of our Read, Listen, Watch (RLW)® series, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Monica Vornbrock and Melissa Chapman, co-founders of The GLO Group, to discuss why investing in company culture can provide roofing companies with a significant competitive advantage.
Monica and Melissa express that the idea of culture isn’t just about fostering a pleasant work environment; it’s about aligning a company’s values, beliefs and practices to create a shared sense of purpose among employees. “Culture is a shared set of workplace beliefs, values, attitudes, standards, purposes and behaviors within an organization,” Melissa explains. It’s a cohesive strategy that makes teams more efficient and keeps employees engaged — a crucial factor in today’s labor market, where disengagement has real financial impacts.
According to Melissa, Gallup research shows that six in ten employees fall into the category of “quiet quitting” — doing only the minimum required — costing businesses trillions annually in productivity. Melissa argues that addressing this trend begins with understanding employees’ needs and integrating their values with company goals. “It’s about making sure that the time they spend with your company is positive so that they can really be happy but also perform,” she notes, stressing the role of leadership in establishing this supportive culture.
Monica further illustrates the importance of leadership buy-in, highlighting that while 83% of companies acknowledge leadership development as essential, only a fraction actually implement structured programs. “How committed is my company? How committed is my leadership team to embracing a healthy company culture?” she asks, expressing the importance of a leadership team genuinely dedicated to building a healthy work culture.
Building this type of culture doesn’t just lead to a better work environment; it also directly impacts the bottom line. With studies showing that companies with positive cultures are 45% more profitable than their peers, the potential returns are clear. As the discussion explores, an organization’s culture isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it concept. Instead, it requires ongoing investment and commitment from leaders at every level, showing employees that they are valued, heard and integral to the company’s long-term success.
