Many high-performing buildings utilize cover boards to make the overall roof system more durable and extend the lifespan of a roof. When it comes to picking the right roof board for a building, USG is a great place to get started. Roofing expert Derrick Hutchinson explained, “USG has the widest portfolio of cover boards in the industry. We have our Securock Gypsum-Fiber Roof Board, we have our Securock UltraLight Glass-Mat Roof Board, Securock UltraLight Coated Glass-Mat Roof Board and our Securock Cement Roof Board.” In this article, we’ll go over the basics of each of these products to help you pick the right cover board for your next project!
1 - Securock® Brand Gypsum-Fiber Roof Board
This cover board is built of a homogenous composition that gives the board strength and water resistance. With a compressive strength of 1800 PSI, this board has one of the best FM uplift ratings in the industry. You can use this in fully adhered and mechanically attached systems with up to 25% fewer fasteners.
2 - Securock® Brand UltraLight Glass-Mat Roof Board
This cover board is easy to cut, handle and install on low-slope, commercial roofing systems. Designed to be high performance with a specially treated core and glass-mat facers, this product resists fire, mold and mildew, making your building safer. You can easily enhance your single ply, mechanically attached systems as this cover board is up to 18% lighter than competitive products (lightweight applies to 1/2" and 5/8" thicknesses only).
3 - Securock® Brand UltraLight Coated Glass-Mat Roof Board
With exceptional bond and low surface absorption in cold-applied adhesive applications, this cover board with a coated mat is a great option for low-slope commercial roofing. Its lightweight core and glass-mat facer are specially treated to provide fire, mold and moisture resistance. Further, this cover board’s mat-to-core tensile strength makes it easier to handle and cut, as it is less likely to delaminate. Similar to the regular glass-mat product, this cover board is also up to 18% lighter than competitive products.
4 - Securock® Brand Cement Roof Board
This is the lightest cement roof board in the industry and is great for use with a variety of membranes and systems. It especially performs well with liquid-applied membranes or as a parapet, fire or thermal barrier roof board as it has unlimited slope classification and is noncombustible. Additionally, because of the cement base, this roof board provides great compressive strength, is incredibly water-durable and will not rot, warp, delaminate, disintegrate or mold when exposed to large quantities of water.
