Grow Profitability and Efficiency in 2021

Mandy McIntyre Growing Your Business
December 31, 2020 at 6:00 a.m.

RCS Influencer Mandy McIntyre says that 2020 challenges helped them identify areas to improve for 2021.

Editor’s note: The following is an interview with Mandy McIntyre as part of our RCS Influencer Interview Series. You can listen to the interview or read the transcript below.

Megan Ellsworth: Hi, welcome to RoofersCoffeeShop® Influencer Interview Series, where we talk to our RCS influencers about the hot tips that they're using in their companies. First, we have Mandy McIntyre in Cleveland, Ohio. She's the operations officer and she has a lot to share.

Mandy McIntyre: Hi, Megan. How are you?

Megan Ellsworth: Good. How are you this morning?

Mandy McIntyre: I am well. Thank you.

Megan Ellsworth: Yeah. So, you are one of our 2020 influencers and this is the December topic. Let's hear your thoughts on it. How do you plan on growing your business in 2021?

Mandy McIntyre: Oh, gosh. So, I think everyone can agree 2020 has been the craziest year ever. We were very much tested on so many different levels. But the one thing that we are trying to focus on as far as growing our business is not so much growing in terms of overall sales and productions, it's more focusing on the growth of our profitability and efficiency and just sustaining our growth right now.

We had so many issues across the board due to COVID, but it really highlighted our shortcomings and what are things we can improve on. And a lot of our focus really for the year shifted to keeping up with all of the different safety regulations, making sure our crews and team members are safe. We kind of got away from focusing on the numbers as far as profitability and where we are budget wise. I mean, obviously it's still always in our meetings and topics and whatnot.

Megan Ellsworth: Right.

Mandy McIntyre: But there became such a human component to the business more than ever. And so, what we're trying to focus on for 2021 is really going back to that numbers-based culture, investing some more time and effort into training for quality control and really curbing our spending and just trying to stick to budgeting a lot better than we did this year.

Megan Ellsworth: Nice. What are some ways that you intend on making those goals happen?

Mandy McIntyre: Well, we have what's called 1CRU which stands for 1st Choice Roofing University.

Megan Ellsworth: Oh, nice.

Mandy McIntyre: What we used to do is, yeah, it was really cool, every month we'd have a training topic, and because of COVID, we weren't able to get everyone together and have these meetings and have these trainings. So, they kind of fell to the wayside and it was reflected, we did see a reflection out in the field. So, we're going to try to get back to that and do it with these new restrictions that we have due to COVID, so smaller groups doing more stuff out in the field versus bringing everyone into our warehouse. It's going to be a challenge because you can't have so many people together, but it's definitely something we need to focus on.

Megan Ellsworth: Right, right.

Mandy McIntyre: It's hard to get everyone together. And so another thing we're going to do is just getting back to that numbers-based culture, having full transparency. So, posting in our warehouse where everyone comes in, showing where we are on jobs so that everyone that's on the team knows where we're at, because even someone on the ground on the cleanup crew should know what the score is on that job, should try to have that in the back of their mind. Again, with 2020 and everything related to COVID, we kind of lost touch with keeping that numbers-based culture. And so that will be definitely a goal of ours this year.

Megan Ellsworth: Excellent. I love it. Well, thank you for sharing how you guys are doing over there and how you plan on growing your business in 2021.

Mandy McIntyre: Awesome. Thank you so much.

Megan Ellsworth: This has been Mandy McIntyre, RCS influencer, in Cleveland, Ohio, speaking on the topic, how they are planning to grow their business in 2021.
