FRSA S.T.A.R. Award Profile: Low-Slope Project Winner

low slope winner
March 30, 2017 at 8:47 a.m.

Advanced Roofing, Inc., won first place in the S.T.A.R. Awards low-slope category for the Publix Distribution Center in Deerfield Beach.

The Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association (FRSA) S.T.A.R. Awards – the Spotlight Trophy for the Advancement of Roofing – highlight industry projects throughout Florida.

FRSA members submitted their roofing projects completed during the previous year, along with an application detailing the project, and in-progress and completion photos for placement in one of six categories: Sustainable, Community Service, Steep Slope, Low Slope, Specialty Metal, and Unique.

Project submission required a description including tear-off (if applicable), preparation, design work, installation, problem solving and any other information that might be unique to the job, such as safety requirements or field fabrication.

A panel of three industry professionals was established to review the submitted projects for the S.T.A.R. Awards. Judging criteria included, but was not limited to: aesthetics, size, completion time, special circumstances, unique project design, complexity of project, workmanship, teamwork, testimonials, and creative problem solving.

The Advanced Roofing Inc. team on this project consisted of:

Project Estimator: Clint Stockman Project Manager: Jessica Kornahrens Superintendent: James Carotenuto Architect: Southeast Design Associates Inc. Manufacturer: FiberTite Roofing Systems Contractor: Robert Kornahrens The project MVP: James Carotenuto

The 20-year-old, 194,217 square-feet, 50-feet-high JP Stevens’ roof located on the Publix Distribution Center in Deerfield Beach was at the end of its service life and at risk of eventual failure that could potentially shut down the center, halting distribution at this critical branch of Publix’s operations in South Florida. Publix selected Advanced Roofing Inc. to tear-off and replace the existing roof system with a new high-performance FiberTite-SM Ketone Ethylene Ester (KEE) single-ply roofing membrane with perimeter and corner enhancements to meet enhanced uplift pressures for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone requirements.

The project was challenging because the tear-off and installation of the new roof system required the crews to operate around the clock so that disruptions were not made to Publix's 24/7 operations which includes over 220 truck bays and train rail running into the facility for ammonia deliveries.

Congratulations to the team from Advanced Roofing Inc!
