Finishes, Fastenings and Accessories, Oh My!

Metal Deck 101 videos give roofing professionals a quick overview on everything you need to know about your next metal deck roof install. 

The Metal Deck 101 video series from A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply, which are provided in both English and Spanish, give industry professionals a resource to enhance their knowledge about metal deck and metal deck accessories while addressing frequently asked questions. 

Sarah, from A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply introduces finishes, explaining that according to the Steel Deck Institute, “The primer coat is intended to protect the steel for a short period of exposure in ordinary atmospheric conditions and shall be considered impermanent and provisional coating.” Given a metal deck is a structural product, this video runs through typical finishes you’ll find on metal roof deck and the best finish for corrosive or high humidity environments. 

In the video on accessories, Sarah tells us about common metal deck accessories, like the self-tapping screws. These screws are used to fasten the metal deck to the steel supports or for connecting the metal deck side to side commonly called side lap screws. Also in the video, Sarah covers the purposes of rubber closures, sump pans, weld washers, pour stops and cell closure.

He tells us to ask our engineer of record: what is being used to fasten the deck and where the deck is getting fastened. “Fastening to the steel can be done with welds, screws, or shot down with pins. The fastening pattern is what instructs the installer exactly where to fasten the deck both at the steel and at the side lap” says Michael. He runs through specs from patterns and the importance of following these instructions as they are part of the building design.
