Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) roofing is one of the fastest growing single-ply membranes on the market. Commercial roofers and building owners alike love PVC for its reflectivity and resistance to chemicals. But what exactly is PVC roofing? Why might roofers want to use it for their commercial roofing projects? These questions and more are answered in our latest Lunch & Learn with Brandon Mark, product manager for Johns Manville.
This Lunch & Learn webinar is perfect for your current employees and new hires who need basic training on what exactly PVC roofing is. In less than 30 minutes, you will learn the history of PVC roofing, the current market surrounding the material, roof design considerations and best practices for installation. You can learn all this valuable information in the time it takes to eat your lunch!
In this webinar, Brandon tells us why PVC roofing is so big in the commercial roofing market. He says that compared to TPO membranes, PVC offers the same advantage of reflectivity. But unlike TPO roofing, it is much more resistant to chemicals.
“By itself, PVC is a rigid polymer... What we do to make that polymer into a sheet so it's flexible and we can use it on a roof, is we add plasticizers, it makes it soft, supple, malleable, and we can use it in membrane solutions on the roof,” he says. “It's a unique formulation and gives chemical resistance with everything that we have in it that you don't get with TPO membranes.”
Another point touched on in the webinar is design consideration. It’s important to decide what design your roof has when deciding if a PVC membrane is right for the job. Brandon says that if there is the potential for chemical exposure to the membrane of the roof, PVC is your ideal choice.
But there are other factors to consider when making this decision. “The thing that you need to understand is the term requirements,” he says. “Understanding what the requirements are of your building, where the building's located, what the building's going to be used for. Uplift from wind pressures is a key thing to understand.”
