Sonora Independent School District in Sutton County, Texas is home to over 900 students and faculty. When a strong hail storm passed through the area in April 2016, causing extensive damage to homes and businesses, school administrators were forced to come up with a plan to address the damage quickly and effectively.
Parsons Commercial Roofing of Waco, Texas, knew of the daunting task the District now faced and wanted to help. The Parsons team partnered with project estimators and managers, safety experts, project designers and administrative staff, to develop a proposal which included the installation of both Duro-Last® membrane and EXCEPTIONAL® Metals standing seam roof panels. They then presented their proposal to the school board and were ultimately awarded the project.
In total, 38 buildings throughout the District – over 300,000 square feet of roofing surface – had to be assessed and replaced. From all three academic campuses to the administration and athletic buildings, Parsons developed an individual plan for every structure – which included either tear off or overlay of the previous roof materials, in addition to the installation of new materials. Altogether, over 120,000 square feet of 50 mil Duro-Last membrane and 130,000 square feet of EXCEPTIONAL Metals LokSeam® standing seam panels were installed throughout the District.
“The safety and education of our students are our top priorities,” explained Sonora High School Principal Sean Leamon. “The Parsons crew went above and beyond to make sure they addressed any safety concerns we had for our students and staff, and they coordinated their operations around our needs when it came to any possible classroom disruptions.”
From start to finish, it took Parsons’ team approximately nine months to complete the project for Sonora Independent School District. “They have been a pleasure to work with throughout this whole process – very friendly and responsive,” said Ross Aschenbeck, District Superintendent. “Between the quality of the Duro-Last and EXCEPTIONAL Metals materials, and the workmanship performed by Parsons, I think we have better roofs than we had before the hail storm hit. We just couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”
