In 2019, community voters passed a bond proposal that allocated funds for major upgrades to Huron Community School buildings, including expansions, renovations and new construction for all facilities from kindergarten through high school. Beyer Roofing of Saginaw, Michigan, was selected to oversee the roofing portion of the project for Renton Middle School, which featured classroom additions, new roofing and a variety of interior upgrades.
“The roof of the original facility had reached the end of its useful life, so the scope of the project consisted of a complete tear-off and re-roof as well as the addition of standing seam panels for the new construction,” said Scott Beyer, estimator for Beyer Roofing.
For the re-roof portion, the Beyer Roofing team removed the existing system down to the metal deck, installing two layers of 2.6-inch Duro-Guard® ISO insulation as well as tapered insulation between the drains. Approximately 200,000 square feet of 50 mil Duro-Last® Membrane was mechanically fastened and custom curbs were utilized for rooftop units. EXCEPTIONAL® Metals 2-Piece Snap-On Compression was then used to terminate the membrane along the perimeter.
As the re-roof portion of the project was completed, focus shifted to the new addition and metal roofing installation. Utilizing the EM LokSeam® panels from EXCEPTIONAL Metals, Beyer Roofing installed approximately 30,000 square feet of standing seam metal, tying into the existing structure to provide a watertight system.
“A section of the roof on the new addition features a 90-degree curve in the middle, so there was a radial element on the standing seam installation that we had to navigate,” said Scott. “I would say that was the most challenging part of the project. It required quite a bit of measuring and planning to make sure we got it right, and it came out beautifully.”
Completed over summer break, it took the Beyer Roofing team approximately two months to install both the membrane and metal roofing portions of the project.
“We’ve been in business for 30 years, and we’ve been installing Duro-Last for just as long,” said Scott. “For us, it’s simple. The manufacturing facility is in our backyard, the warranty is top-notch, customer service is always supportive of our needs, and we can offer a complete roofing system between Duro-Last and EXCEPTIONAL Metals. No other manufacturer can offer us that level of service.”
